New Lochaber Scotland resident saying hello!

Post: # 249566Post scotsmart »

Just popping in to say hello, after the most tremendous move to stunning Lochaber in the Scottish Highlands and to hopefully a better calmer, stressfree life from now on.

We have always fancied a semi self sufficient lifestyle yet never quite managed it we have however always grown veg etc even many years back when a "townie" however in this move we now have a semi cottage that we beleive is ideal for a certain degree of SS over and above anywhere else we have been, we are duly hoping to pick up a lot of tips, tricks and guidance as we peruse your posts, joining in where we can!

Our first port of call will without doubt be to your alternative heat sources section as we have just lived through the most horrendous weather system i have ever done in all my 48 yrs on this planet resulting in 147 mph winds that knocked our power out for almost 3 days as we only have the dreaded storage heating we have froze for 3 days due to outside temps being -2 on a good night, we now have power restored but the house will take days to re-heat to any degree now and we have more of the same forcast for Tues/Wed the main problem being i suffer with MS as such i require to be kept warm or i seize up and get seriously stiff/sore a situation i now need to remedy prior to doing anything else.

So i am very interested in learnimg about or finding out about either temporary emergency heat and power sources to ensure at times like the past few days we are ok or indeed full-time systems that we would not require to have electricity to operate possibly a multi-fuel stove heating system or similar i am open to suggestion

For now all replies answered we look forward to meeting you'all throughout the next few days as we find our feet and begin posting

Hi there and welcome
Let us be lovely
And let us be kind
Let us be silly and free
It won't make us famous
It won't make us rich
But damn it how happy we'll be!

Hi and welcome from Orkney  . We had the high winds too but were lucky to not have any damage.......apart from my hubbies weather station that didn't stand up to the weather! Love it over your way, beautiful area.
Life's a bitch and then you diet.

Many thanks for all the welcomes.
Our power supplies are a bit hit & miss right now be be assured as and when i will be around asking and gleaning information where i can.
@ Spider 8 - we moved from Loch Lomondside a mere month ago, had tried to get onto Shetland, Orkney and the others having completed a whole 28 housing application forms (to cut a 3 yr long story into a few words suffice to say that anti-social and disabled hate issues made it impossible to continue where we were as incommers of some 10+ yrs only) but we were determined to find somewhere with either no or few neighbours, we have only one an truly stunning view to die for and nobody else with-in about a mile or so of us the beach of the River Morar literally accross the road we lare in our dream home the only thing better would be a totally remote detached property which is rather unlikely in Council/ha terms so we feel we have what we wanted finally and a semi decent sized garden (all be it a field basically right now) we will be able to finally be SS as we feel all really should be to some degree, it shall take time no doubt but health matters aside we have plenty of that so as i say bring it on, a lot of intwresting reading ahead, ideas to try, fixes for all of the issues ahead.

I do look forward to interacting when we can, but fear not if for now i dont answer immediately its just we have lost our power (AGAIN) bring it on a constant supply in the 20th century is it really to much to ask .....
