Newbie from Aberdeenshire

Post: # 26267Post PurpleDragon »

Hi there

Newbie here from north east Aberdeenshire.
Three small sprogs and 2.4 acres for them to go bonkers in.
Hens, rabbits, dithering between a couple of sheep or a couple of goats.

YAY another from Aberdeenshire...

Great to meet you - whereabouts are you based? We are near Alford.

We've got hens, ducklings, a gosling... and about to get a couple of goats... we weren't sure whether to go for goats or sheep but decided on goats because we'll also milk them... how many people can milk their lawnmowers eh

Thanks for the welcome, Davina. We don't do a lot of walks because my middle one doesnt like to walk. I enjoy it though, and sometimes force them into it

We are up near Turriff/Banff way.

I want ducks and geese but apparently they are really messy, and with the wee ones, I'm not up for installing a pond just the now. KNowing mine, they would drown within 30 minutes of putting the water in it.

I favour goats over sheep, but they are like hens teeth to find, aren't they?!? :?

I wish we could milk our lawnmower. We have one of those ride-on jobbies and it has spent more time in the shop than it has on the grass.

We were up your way (ish) at the weekend.... did you get the big storm??

The ducks and geese are a bit messy I suppose but it's not caused a problem - our little one loves them but then I've only got one little one to worry about... my other children are somewhat older.

We've got a few contacts for goats - we joined the highland goat club. Are you looking for any type in particular??

Hiya

Shame we didn't know you were about. You could have come and met my hens :)

We did get a storm, but it wasn't that big. I was rather disappointed. I love a good thunder storm, me

I have posted a request on HenHut http://www.henhut.com (excellent place) for anyone with surplus ducks or geese.

I had a look at the Highland Goat site. It seemed fairly defunct actually. I couldn't see any more updates since 2002 or something! i don't really mind what type of goats I get, although I'm attracted to pygmy goats. I won't be using them for milking - more for keeping my gorse hedges in check

Hi PurpleDragon

Sorry for being a bit late with my welcome, I have a lot of internet problems...

Yes, another one from NE Scotland, but further south than you! AND I have two goats; not milkers, but brilliant lawnmowers (plus pruners of all they can get their teeth on). They are cashmere goats, so I'm hoping to be able to make my own cashmere jumper in a few years' time!

Hi Ina, and thanks for the welcome.

Hmm - Kincardineshire. Not sure I know where that is. I'm rubbish at geography :)

You say you don't have milkers. Are they male? I just got a book from the library, and it would seem that castrated males are the job for what I want.

Hello!!

We've now got two goats - one 12 month old british saanen X angora called Nia and the other a 4 year old milker British saanen called Madeleine - both are lovely and settling in well together.

It's Ina's fault that I was convinced to have goats - her's (both female) are so lovely and are such great characters.
David has had goats before so he didn't need any persuading..... 8 pints of fresh creamy goats milk today :))))) Madeleine gets a couple of pints of that back to drink but still a massive amount of milk - we need some good cheese recipes and quickly LOL
