Getting close to nature with Self Sufficientish

Post: # 26947Post Millymollymandy »

Just had to share this with you.

As I was sitting here reading through your posts, a starling flew through the window which is right behind my typing chair, and sat on my back!!!!! I didn't know what kind of bird it was until I backed myself up to the window (as the cat was coming towards me menacingly  ) and the birdie flew off! Luckily no poop!

I thought I was doing well when a butterfly landed on my shoulder last week out in the garden! Great story!

The closest I've got to a wild bird was a couple of years ago when my parents had a friendly robin in their yard. It trusted them enough that it would feed from your hand - I was amazed how it could swoop down, jab at a crumb and not touch my hand at all!

Lovely story M3!! I love starlings.

Nothing to compare to that one but took a pic of a yellow (or could be grey) juvenile wagtail that perched just outside my window a couple of weeks ago while I was typing on Ish.

We have a pair of Little Owls that live in one of the outbuildings and sit most of the day on a jutting out stick. A few weeks ago their 3 chicks fell out of their nest and there was no way to get them back there - it was so lucky the many resident cats hadnt found them first! We bought them in for the night until we could make a safe place that was impossible for the cats to get to. I hand fed them raw burger by tweezers, it was lovely! Unfortunately one of them had broken its leg in the fall and had to be disposed of.

We put them in a box and back onto a high ledge in the barn and was very pleased see the parents back around them immediately. I made my hubby climb up every other day to check on their progress and there was always plenty of mice in there for dinner. They grew at an amazing rate and I made him take another photo about a week or so later.

When he went back again, they had left the box - without so much as a thank you note lol.
However they have now taken up place on the stick, still bundles of grey fluff for now, with the parents watching on from the walnut tree!

That's great Wendy and what amazing photos! I know we are not supposed to intervene when baby birds fall out of nests, but sometimes it is really hard not to. I have heard of people doing this sort of thing with owls however, and the parents come back to feed the young. Obviously owls don't get put off by the human scent on their babies.

I saw a startling today - first for ages! There are none left around near our house. The owls are great - working in the vets we get to see all sorts of raptors - sparrow hawks are prone to accidents as we've had more of those than anything else. Once we had a VERY feisty little owl - dead cute. We treat them and then pass them on to a man who looks after them and releases the ones he can and looks after the rest.

Once, when I was about 10, my cat brought back a blue tit, I shouted at her to "DROP IT", which ,surprisingly, she did and I fed it for a few days and it started to fly onto my shoulder, so I decided it was OK to release it. It flew into the tree, back on to my shoulder and then onto the grass. Then my cat re-appeared, caught it and then ate it. Quickly. Charming!
