River Cottage and Jimmy's Farm in one family day out!

Post: # 26365Post Tracey Smith »

River Cottage fans and cricket lovers alike, I thought you might be intersted in this press release I have been sending out. Thorncombe is on the West Dorset/Somerset border - drop me a note if you would like further information or directions. Bring your 'Hugh stuff' for crafty autographs!!!

Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall Heads the ‘Celebrity 11’s’

Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall helps to bookmark Sunday 23rd July as an important new addition to the southwest’s sporting calendar.

Along with an aspiring array of fellow cricket lovers, Hugh and the ‘Celebrity 11’s’ will throw down the gauntlet of challenge to the ‘Thorncombe Codgers’ at the inaugural Celebrity Cricket Match, being held at the Thorncombe Sports and Social Club.

Somerset and West Dorset’s Ivel FM (105.6 & 106.6) will be broadcasting live from the event and no doubt cheerleading for their afternoon presenter and keen sportsman Neil Quigley, proudly playing for the ‘11’s’.

Neil is joined by teammates the Rt Honourable Oliver Letwin MP, secret weapon Richard Pyman (Cambs and Dorset) and many more. On the sidelines clapping their support will hope to welcome Hermione Norris, Punch & Daily Mail cartoonist Sam Smith, Marcus Brigstock and countless others, bringing a sprinkling of showbiz glamour to the day.

The already infamous Celebrity Auction has attracted a great deal of attention and many fabulous items have been very kindly donated. Tracey Smith, event co-ordinator cheekily asks, ‘We would be delighted to receive any memorabilia cluttering up your celebrity broom cupboard!’

This sparkling family day out is the brainchild of marketing guru Phil Gordon and the proceeds will be split between local charity The Magdalen Project, an eco-educational centre of excellence in Winsham and Leukaemia Research. The Woodroffe School Jazz Band will be entertaining the crowd earlier in the day and it will migrate to a rocking live gig by local band ‘Blitz’ with Phil on drums (if he has any energy left) as the sun goes down. With cream teas and local delicacies being served too, there will be something there for everyone.

Phil explained ‘I am delighted. There has been an incredible response from participants and ticket holders alike. I created this fundraiser to help the search for a cure to a disease that took the life of a good friend and also, because I wanted to make a contribution to my community. Thorncombe offers a perfect venue for the whole family to have a great day out and to raise money for two great causes.’

Tickets are just £5.00 for adults and £2 for under 16’s, bought in advance at many local outlets.

....£6,300 for Leukemia Research and The Magdalen Project http://www.TheMagdalenProject.org.uk a local charity and eco-educational centre.

The day was a cracker, great weather, lovely people, some of the Strawbridges came too (Brigit is a human dynamo!), there was smashing food from Jimmy's Farm and a live gig to finish it all off.

I have never been part of anything that raised that much money before and am truly chuffed to bits.
