insects in the polytunnel

Post: # 29750Post hedgewizard »

There's no problem getting them in... but I'd like them to get out too! None of the sites or books that I've looked at mention it, but my tunnel is a deathtrap for flies, wasps and butterflies, which fly in and then batter themselves senseless on the plastic until their eventual heat death, unless rescued by me.

Anyone else have this problem, and how do you deal with it? I have thought of using yellow "dayglo" card at one end, angled down so it can't be seen from above, to try to tempt them back out into the open.

Do you need them in there (don't know what you grow / if you need polinators)? If not, why nor rig up a flyscreen to stop them in the first place.

Think yourself lucky, I had to rig up a rabbit screen for mine!

Thanks for that Diana, Digi said much the same so I think I'll have to hang some wide mesh flaps up, with a piece of lath at the bottom to stop them flapping around too much.
