Germany Calling

Post: # 3065Post Haddock »

Hi all

I'm Haddock from Marburg in Germany. I originally hail from from Devon in UK. I really enjoy this site, and the practical advice. Loved the stuff on composting. Made my family all pee in a bucket and then with great fanfare we poured it in the compost bin
Our house has only been built a couple of years, so the garden is very new. Planted apple, plum & mirabelle fruit trees, and have recently cut out an area of turf and am experimenting with a few veggies.
Our kiddie loves gardening and she is very proud of her sunflowers which are going well. We are not that self sufficient at the moment but are planning to get along the way little by little......

Hello there Haddock good to see you on here.

On the compost thing, I had to wait last night for all of the others on my allotment to dissapear so I could have a wee in the compost bin. I had also stored up two bottles of the stuff to pour in, managed to keep it secret from my girlfriend emma who was busily weeding away. She does not seem to like the idea of putting my wee back on the plants.

If you have gut and area of turf pile it up grass sides touching and then next year you can use it as loam.

Hello Haddock, I'm new too (the last one to post hello before you!).

I always wanted an outside loo for when I'm in my muddy wellies. Now I use my potting shed and a bucket and it goes on the compost too! Great fun!

Hope you enjoy the forum.

Hi Haddock.
I am fairly new too. Welcome.
I just wondered if self sufficiency, or a degree of it, was practiced much in Germany. Do they have clubs etc like we do here in the UK?

Not sure really about clubs, but I think people are more enviromentally aware here. The Green party have been very active for years. Most people live in flats here, and quite a lot of people have Gardens away from there home, a bit like allotments. The main difference is that the 'shed' is normally a bit more comfortable, and people tend to stay at their allotments for the weekend. Most seem devoted to a mix of Fruit & Veg and flowers.

Perhaps there are clubs, but it'll all be in German, and I must confess, my German is not as good as what it should be
Certainly people are more switched on about solar here, and riding bikes is a lot more popular here. More cycle lanes and dedicated cycle routes.
