pretentious pronunciation

I've got "Newsnight" drivelling away in the background - they're now onto the unutterably dreadfully pretentious "reviews of the arts", and are just wittering on about something called the "black dahlia" - to my recollection it is correctly pronounced "day - lee - ahh" - Martha thingummy just pronounced it "Darrr - leee- ahh"

Maybe's she's foreign? That's how you pronounce it in France and the Netherlands, probably Germany too.

Just as well she didn't talk about fuchsias. In the 'germanic' countries it is pronounced somewhat differently to the UK.

is it me being a miserable curmudgeon - or is the whole "arts" thing pretentious?

To me, Germaine Greer summed it up the other week by saying "the thing that annoys me about the theatre is it's self-importance!"
