Tony Robinson on "end timers"

Post: # 33757Post Martin »

did anyone else catch this last night on Channel 4 at 7? - absolutely petrifying!
Right wing american christian fundamentalist nutters, who are pouring money into Israel, and trying to encourage them to rebuild the Temple of Solomon (on top of one of Islam's holiest shrines).....and to reoccupy the biblical jewish lands - all to help fulfill the "end times" prophecies in "revelations"!!! :pale:
Trouble is they are in the majority in the US, and have a lot of political "clout"
God preserve us from religion!

Can we agree on "God preserve us from nutters with political clout?"

got no problem with God, of whichever persuasion (I think she's probably black), but have enormous difficulty with "religions"! :cooldude:
They are at the root of so much horror and suffering, all in the name of "god"
- my attitude is cut out the middlemen, and deal direct!

which raises the point that there has been a call for "moderate moslems" to do all they can to stay the hand of their fundamentalist brethren.......(with which I heartily concur) - pots and kettles job methinks - where are all the "moderate" christians giving the US fundamentalist loonies an earful? :?
If I were a committed christian, I'd be raving at them for bringing my religion into disrepute - it all sounds ominously silent!

How about the Pope giving a recent lecture about how violence in the name of religion is never right? Actually religious leaders talk about this kind of stuff all the time, it just doesn't usually make the 6 o'clock news. And why would it? "Priest Says Love Thy Neighbour" ranks slightly below "Dog Bites Man" in newsworthiness. "Hook-Handed Muslim Cleric Says Blow Up Houses Of Parliament", now that's entertainment.

I saw the programme and was horrified. The scariest thing about it is that the prediction of the end is coming true because they are allowing it to all go to pot because thats what they think will happen (if that makes sense?) - dont change the wars cos thats what it says in the book, dont change the famine cos thats whats supposed to happen etc. Terrifying!

Being in the Home Education circuit, you hear all sorts of stuff, a lot like this. I didn't think anyone really believed that sort of thing. I now avoid the "Christian" group here, but then, so do a lot of the Christians... :flower:

lol - that says it all really - religion is fundamentally peaceful and caring whatever particular brand it is, its the bigots and warmongers who use it as an excuse that are the worry.

But, if you're moderate, you can't (by definition) be going off raving all the time. You will find plenty of strong critics of fundamentalism within the wider Christian fold (and the same with every other religion that comes to mind where I have enough information), some of whom can see better ways to live than just giving other people an earful (or worse).

don't I recollect someone chucking the moneylenders out of the temple? - hardly some wuss who'll sit idly by!
So what ARE you going to do?- pray that they mend their ways? :?
I'm sorry, I feel very strongly about this - to my mind you SHOULD be doing all you can to make sure that the "moderate" church distances itself as far as possible from these dangerous loonies! :cooldude:
As I said in an earlier post, the government are trying to encourage moderate moslems to do so with their barking mad fringe - shouldn't christians have the decency to do the same thing? :?

So should I be spending my time travelling round to places where mad-eyed fundamentalists meet and shouting at them (as trying to reason is probably not going to help too much) or making sure that the congregation of my local church and others I have influence over are encouraged to listen before speaking and treat others with respect?

I have picked the latter - within the limits of my time and energy, "all I can" is working where I have earned an influence, not going round picking fights.

I wasn't necessarily meaning shouting in the literal sense - (although I'd be sorely tempted!) - but to exert every pressure possible on the hierarchy of whatever church I was member of to make formal protests, and to distance it from these people who to my mind are "taking the Lord's name in vain" :cooldude:
I seem to also remember "passing by on the other side"........... :geek:
I'm looking forward to the present archbish of Canterbury giving voice - I have more respect for him than all of his predecessors, he does from time to time come out with some excellent pronouncements!

Hang on, Martin. Just because Tony Robinson made a TV programme for Channel 4 doesn't mean it has only just started happening, nor does it mean this is the most pressing issue facing the world today. I got the impression from the title and the style of delivery that is was influenced at least in part by the current popularity of the da Vinci Code. I predict we'll be seeing a lot more TV shows, books and movies about this-that-and-the-other "bible code" in the months to come.

You obviously feel strongly about it. What are *you* going to do?

I wish they did "replay" for Channel 4 - what is SO frightening is that this isn't a loony fringe - this is "mainstream" in the US, and they have an enormous following - every day they are pouring money into Israel, and doing their best to ferment the predicted "end times" - like global warming, this is no joke, it is a very real threat to world peace that needs countering - now! - not next week! :?
Had you seen the programme, you'd have shivered when listening to the claptrap offered by some of the "preachers" - they WANT Israel to settle the old biblical lands, they WANT the temple of Solomon rebuilt on top of one of the most holy mosques for Islam - they WANT WW3 - and they are doing very nicely in fermenting it, whilst too many people sit idly by.................. :?

what am I going to do? - I'm doing it! - making sure my christian friends are made aware of the travesty occurring in the name of THEIR religion - they have far more "clout" than me, they are supposedly members of the same faith!
I will be buzzing an email to the Archbish of Canterbury, but as a "non-believer", I obviously have far less influence than those who are in the church! :cooldude:
