what an i doing wrong

Post: # 35997Post maggie144 »

For 2 years now i have tried to grow basil, but have had no luck at all.
the first year i tried it straight in the ground, the second year in a tub, neither way has worked.

has anyone got any ideas as to how i can grow it, or what i am doing wrong. All my other herbs grow well, and i am at the moment hanging them for drying

Please help i need to grow my favourite herb.

maggie :?

No expert me - but I did succeed when I potted some seedlings up and kept them on the kitchen window ledge. They lasted ages and the kitchen smelled wonderful!

Maggie

I sowed some earlier this year.. indoors... nothing happened so I popped the pots into the propogator and all of a sudden I had a result... took them out and then they died. I did the last lot in the propogator and then put them in a warm place.. they've not grown quickly but then it's a small leaved variety anyway... WOW how concentrated the smell and flavour is...

I potted seeds from small leaved basil in spring in regluar potting soil and kept them in south window sill, with a bit of organic fertilizer. We had more than enough basil through summer until they died this autumn.

i cheated...

i've never been any good at growing basil from seed either (the slugs always always much it before it gets a chance).

I bought one from the reduced counter at T*scos. then i split it into 3 (they always overcorwd the pot so that the plant looks more impressive) and planted it into a long tub thingy (cant remember what they're called now!!) and put it outside under the kitchen window. Its got shade from the lean-to tye thingy that we've got built on the patio and it gets watered too.

From seed, you need bottom heat to get good germination; grow them on in sheltered conditions, don't overwater. Will do well in warmth, in ashletered place outside.

I grew from seed (sweet basil) - in an egg box sat in a plastic tray, covered with clear plastic bag until the seedlings were touching it - on a sunny windowsill. I potted them on when they were big enough & have sat the pots outside on a table. Had a little damage, from caterpillars I think, but still have big bushy plants.

Not sure what to do now the weather is turning. I only have one really bright windowsill & it's occupied by chillies at the mo. Need to get the greenhouse built....

Got some basils growing on front room windowsill. Got some outside flowered and slightly holey. I start mine off on the windowsill - seem to have no problem. Even parsley germinates in no time.
