Do you still need to know morse? If so, and at risk of giving away my age and dodgy past, tell him...goldy1 wrote:My OH has just passed his Amature radio licenceand is driving me "Bravo. Alpha. Romeo. Mike. Yanky. "

I heard a radio spot the other day, where a 93 year-old ww2 veteran morse operator was wiping the floor with teenagers texting the same messages - he was FAR quicker!

Whatcha need a license for???
I used to have CB Radio when travelling, which was heaps good for asking big trucks what the heck they were doing bearing down on my engine bay (VW) - but if I needed a license I never knew I did!!!
We use handheld two-ways on the farm (and in the city shopping centres when my kids go roaming and Mum gets lost...LOL)
I think my callsign nowdays is Houston.
As in, "Houston we have a problem..."

How to get yourself in trouble with radio hams!Boots wrote:Whatcha need a license for???

Amateur radio is strictly licenced but it means you get to use serious transmitting equipment (usually via a tiered licencing system) that allow you to use LF, HF and VHF frequencies to communicate nationally and globally.
In Britain, the umbrella group is the Radio Society of Great Britain.
In Oz, it's the Wireless Institute of Australia. BTW, it was a ham radio operator who got the first message out of Darwin in 1974 that the city had been devastated by Cyclone Tracy. Ham radio operator also provided much needed additional communications after the Ash Wednesday fires in '83 and the Newcastle earthquake in '89.
When back in Oz and travelling around the bush, my old Landcruiser used to have 27 MHz CB, a UHF CB and an HF radio (for contacting the RFDS as well as other hams).
I've given him the message ST I'm awaiting his reply. Aparently you do have to do morse but only a short message to pass your test.
WE used to use CBs back in the 80s but every man and his boy had one and they became a haven for "£$%^&() idiots. I don't know what ther like now since the mobile phone has taken over. They used to be fun.
We go camping a lot and there isn't always a good mobile reception. The family we go away with have also passed thier licences Mum, Dad and 13 year old. They'er all off to a radio fair next week to buy some more gere.
it keeps them quiet.
