He was a cross breed, Rhode island red,welsummer & maran he was healthy, and happy. i don't know how long they live for, but i got him in august 2004 when he was 2 years old.
can anyone tell me why they think he died

tragedy struck today
I am very sad today, went out today and found my beautiful cockerel dead in the hen house, have no idea how or why he died.
He was a cross breed, Rhode island red,welsummer & maran he was healthy, and happy. i don't know how long they live for, but i got him in august 2004 when he was 2 years old.

As for why he died, hard to say without more detail. It could be age, but a healthy chicken can live for five to 10 years depending on breed - some have allegedly lived as long as 15.

I have had a few chickens die like that too. One day they seem great and the next dead for what seems like no reason-

I'm so sorry for your loss - I know that even a cockerel can feel like part of your family.
Seems to me that any animal becomes a person when we get to know them, but just in a different body. Mine certainly are. And the real drag is that, as their lifespan is (usually!) so much shorter than ours, I'm (probably) going to get to see all of them die. So, what to do? Make damn sure that their lives are absolutely as happy as we possibly can, that's what. Like I bet you did. So, at least you can feel good about that, and so you should.
There are only two certainties about death, for all of us: it's going to happen, but we don't know when. Kind of like taxes...except with them we know when!
