There are some that bite in the UK - I came across some articles when I was Googling for info after getting that bite on my neck.

Just to put your minds at rest of course!!!

Yup, I've been bitten in good old Blighty by a BIG female house spider who got me between the thumb and index finger where the skin is thin while I was trying to relocate her. No more than a nip really, but it did itch after! I've also been bitten by a snake (presumably an adder) which I didn't see - I thought it was a painful thorn snag until I looked at the wound.

In Thailand I encountered a Cobalt Blue Tarantula in my hotel room, which I thought was a fake one until it moved... just as well I didn't touch it! The hotel staff dealt with it pretty damned quick...

In't that puuurdy.

I believe that all spiders can bite, and are poisonous, but it's all a matter of degree, and those in the UK are at the low end of the hazardous scale - to us, at least.

Your story about a snake bite is surprisingly similar to something that happened to me as a kid, when shuffling through some undergrowth. The was a momentary whack of something unseen but sharp on my knee - at the time I thought it was a thorny stick that had sprung up as I stepped on it, or something. But rolling my trouser leg up revealed two little puncture marks, hardly penetrating the skin, but quite distinctive.

Absolutely nothing happened as a result of this, and I have been told that even a grass snake will strike if it feels under attack, so maybe that was waht it was. Or maybe it really was a stick after all.

Surprisingly, the most painful 'bite' I have had in recent times came from an earwig that I scooped up in my hand to take outside. Those pincers can be bleedin' powerful for the size of creature.

Yup, same one that bit me, I think  - so it's now in France.

yeh I have been bitten by British spiders several times. first time I was telling a fellow student not to be so nampy pampy about a little old spider.. and scooped it in my hands to set out outside. that will teach me.

and these days I always squeeze the fingers of my gloves before gardening.... after i found one in there that did not like being squashed.

never anything worse than a nip though.
