G'Day All,

A short while ago, due to my presence on this site, a young lady (well no longer THAT young, my age anyway) PMed me. She was the girl I took to my 6th form (year 12) fairwell (don't know the UK equivalent). I haven't seen her for over 30 years. We talked about stuff that happened back then and she filled me in on a lot of stuff I didn't realise or had forgotten. She lives in the US now so we won't be catching up for coffee soon, but I am just flabbergasted that she was able to track me down from half way round the world!

Have to say I have a horror of this sort of thing. School reunions, or meeting people you haven't seen for 30 years seems very strange to me. The idea of Friends Reunited gives me the heebie-jeebies. Gaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Run for it!

Obviously not everyone shares this view, and I have to concede to once having entered certain people's names into Google to see what may have become of them. One or two hits came up, but I found it very depressing to find out about how we were all entirely different people; we don't look the same, we don't have the same interests, our politics have changed, our values and priorities have changed. It just seemed like a way of tormenting myself.

2 of my mates from highschool were taken out pretty early. One had his first car come off the jacks and crush him and the other was hit by a truck. I don't think we'd even made our 20's when that happened.

I have once met up with a couple of girls from highschool, and I was pushed into both of those "lets catch up" sessions. Ah! Flat out boring and I vowed I would never be sucked into another invitation like that again.

A few years back I got a phone call out of the blue about a school reunion. The girl wanted to have it at the old swimming pool where we used to hang out after school. YEAH RIGHT!!!! Near 40's running around in swim suits... They are nutters, those reunion types... I'm convinced of it!

I am still in touch with a couple of people from school but that is it. I don't think I would really want to go to a reunion either, whenever there are a lot of people my age together there are only 3 or 4 conversations - house prices and isn't it great that our house is worth 3 times the ammount now (boring), Kids who has them and when am I going to have them, marrage - not in the near future and how great that x is doing right now - but it just so happens that they earn more than x anyway. - oh joy.

I got fed up with reading the same thing from everyone on friends reunite so decided to write a creative entry for mine. -

After leaving School I worked as an off shore oil rig for 20 years. Unfortunately they decided to tarmac over the part of the North sea that I was working in so had to find alternative employment. I am now working as a part time gimp in Telford. The money is not good but I have excellent prospects. Am hoping to have a sex change and become a domanatrix by 2008. Ah life is grand. I also have had 33 wives and am the happy father of 458 kids.

I have been aproached by a bloke via email offering me $10 000 000, I have given him my bank details, national insurance number, address and previous employment history. I have also paid a modest admin fee, I expect the money will come rolling in soon and will throw a big party when it does.


Also made up a bloke called loda codswallop as a reaction to all the nice lives that everyone is apparently leading. his entry is -

I have been looking at how everyone got on since they left school and I have not had nearly as much luck. I have been in and out of jobs, got no kids and have had bouts of mental illness. I wonder if I am alone it certainaly seems so. Wow half of you have travelled the world have great jobs and looks like life could not be better, .

Bah humbug! I like the idea of catching up with people I haven't seen for some time. I'm fascinated by how somethings change and others stay the same. Above all though, it is a reminder that the past is a distant country that we can never revisit....

Must admit I went to the `40 years since we left` re-union with the best mate from those days.
Unbelievably our old headmistress was there and we stood in front of her all bashful and nervous.
She peered at us and quavered, "Oh yes, I remember you, you were NAUGHTY girls weren`t you?"
We just giggled and blushed as though we were 15 in gym slips and bloomers again.

goign back is always a bit tricky, still having changed my name twice since school days, they might ahve trouble finding me!

I do still have one good friend from school. I reckon the ones you stay in touch with are the ones you actually want to talk to.....

My pet hate is those jolly round robin letters, where everything in their lives is fan-blummin-tastic....

I've talked with a few people from school through friendsreunited and though its good to hear how their doing etc I wouldn't go to a reunion or even really want to meet them, i wouldn't have a clue what to talk about. I was the odd one out then so gods knows what they'd think of me now!

In GENERAL terms I tend to agree with Stew and Boots. Years ago I went to a 25 year high school reunion and all it did was confirm my opinion that most were jerks not worth keeping in touch with. The couple or few I really would have liked to catch up with didn't show.

This was a bit different in that she was once someone "special" and took the time to seek me out. Blew me away........

I have found that most of the people I went to school with have been pleasantly improved by the mellowing effects of maturity. That isn't to suggest that they have all become people I would go out of my way to spend a lot of time with but the little reunion that someone organised two or three years back yielded a pleasant afternoon in the pub.

One of the things that was most fascinating was that most people were clearly recognisable except for one guy who had changed in physical appearance so much (dropping the curly hair and puppy fat) that nobody recognised him straight off the bat!

I think it helps that I don't live too far from where I grew up - a lot more would be riding on a get together that involved more than a short drive down into the countryside.

i try and avoid the people from school still.

I have my friends, and i stick to them but one of the bullies came up to me a little while ago, and i told her where to go.

Can't stand all that 'i'm so wonderful, i've done better than you (in my opinion)' bullshit.
