I've been gazing out the window and I see what looks like a comet... at first I thought it might be a plane but it's not moving very quickly at all... it's fairly low in the west/southwest sky and is currently covered by cloud at my location....

My pleasure
I actually think that it might be a comet but I can't understand the blooming maps of the skies....

You can often see things moving in the sky, occasionally you can see satillites and the space station moveing overhead. According to Jodrell Bank The space station should be visible an hour before dawn and an hour after sunset for the next few days, the 15th onwards clearest for Aberdeen. Could that be what you saw?
kind thoughts

I'm pretty sure now that it was Comet McNaught -
The pic isn't brilliant but it's not too bad.... I've had to reduce the size to put it on here though.

The Jodrell Bank site is good... thanks for that one!!
Apparently the best time to see it is either at dawn in the east or sunset in the west.

awww thanks... I am hoping that the weather will be ok tomorrow so that I can try again, with the tripod and zoom lens. I don't think I'll get the pics at dawn in the east though as there are hills in the way.. although I could walk up the hill at the back of us if I'm feeling energetic and can persuade the young'un to come with me.
I'm really excited by it - I've never seen a comet in real life before. I feel like a big kid.

cool! - no point in looking tonight for us - as its been raining non-stop here.
I remember seeing hale-bop comet a few years ago - proper tail and everything - makes you really understand how people would see it as a sign.. maybe go following yonder star. - quite special to see.

Will look out for that one then cheers. I remember Hale Bop, just sort of sat there for ages.
