We were plunged into cold and darkness over the weekend at my OH's student digs so I thought I'd share our tip for cooking. Put tea lights in the bottom of the grill pan! Enough water for 3 mugs of tea (actually 2 mugs and porridge for 2) took 15 minutes to boil but when you haven't anything else to do it doesn't seem that long.
Fortunately the freezer was in the ice cold annex and so didn't defrost!

Very resourceful, I like it.

For a slightly large DIY hob try a gasifier.
They can be used indoors with a window open.
