Yep will have to agree with everyone else, a great compromise and it explains with one glance that the avatar is not there by accident. Extra slick and tooltips would be a great idea too. Cheers for working on that wulf.

I will see if I can do some more samples in the next few days - something a little bit bigger and a little bit shinier.

I like all the ideas of the vatars - however can somebody explain clearly and s l o w l y how to put your own pics in, mine are all to big, can you give a simpletons guide on how to reduce pics to an acceptable size.

An image editor of viewer will do the job. Try installing IrfanView if you don't have one. Load your image into the viewer, go Image/Resize, and have a play around until you get something the right size. Best to make a copy of your original and play with that, because as soon as you [/i]Save[/i] any changes will become permanent.

I like Wulf's idea, too - especially if it would give a little more room for our own pictures, as I can't link to a server elsewhere and only have my 'avatar' space if I want to post a picture.

Okay - what about these? They are a little bit larger and zingier than my earlier design but don't take up so much space as the existing pictures, as well as being more obviously related to the forum:

The smaller a picture gets, the harder it is to make it visually appealing, especially if you are shrinking it down from a larger source version. My trick was to take a larger image, boost up the contrast and colour, and then make it smaller. It is the same principle used in stage make-up; it might look over the top close up but is great from audience-distance.

Glad you like them.
