I saw someone on TV planting 2 potato's together instead of singly when planting out. Does anyone else do this and is there an advantage or disadvantage?

I do. One big, one small. I don't know why. I suppose just because my nutty 81-year old neighbour told me to. He also said the largest eyes on each seed spud should face in opposite directions (although always upwards if you see what I mean.)
