Excuse Me-Mini Rant-People Who Don't Understand

Post: # 53421Post yugogypsy »

Rick has been on the phone with his sister :pukeright: for over an hour now, trying to get her to understand why we choose to live this self-sufficient life.

She lives in Vancouver-a perpetual student of journalism courses-never has got a job and shes only a bit younger than Rick (he's 52)

She blocked our email addresses so we can't send her articles on our interests.

She really is impossible

I'm glad she isn't MY sister, she'd get a real talking to! :argue:

Family-some of mine are at least as bad-but at least they leave me alone

I wouldn't like to take sides in a family feud (boy, can they get destructive), but the important thing, Lois, is that you understand why you chose to live as you do.

At the risk of sounding like a cheap, armchair psychotherapist, it is very easy to slip into the sort of thinking that ties our own feeling of self-worth to the responses of others. Unfortunately, there will always be people who do not share your aims, views and values. But this doesn't invalidate them. If you keep reminding yourself that you know why you are doing it, then other people's responses will annoy you less. And nor is it your responsibility to make them see the error of their ways. Just accept that they are different - in my experience, judging others is nearly always a route to unhappiness.

OK, times up; that'll be $40 please. And please feel free to make an appointment for next time.

I knew it, I knew it, I knew it!

Your not cheap Stew!

But seriuosly folks,

I am fairly well known within my circle of family, friends, aquaintences and neighbours etc. as being a weirdo and don't really care. Some peple get it, some don't - most being the latter, and some are just polite just in case I start to froth. Stew's right, so long as YOU believe in what your doing, bugger the rest of them. At least your providing a good example!

Thanks guys, I appreciate it, I DO know why I'm doing this-and so does Rick.

And henceforth his non-understanding sis will get ignored.

I am tempted to ship her a basket of fresh produce to make a point that this works-she says she loves fresh veg.

But I doubt it would convince her-so I won't bother-save it for friends in need like apartment dwellers and other friends who don't have room or can't garden due to age or infirmity.

Rick's working on the chicken coop today-should have hens by fall, have to wait-the coop has to do duty as a hay store and wood store until we get new sheds up for those.

I inherited this land and the skills that go with managing it (my paternal Grandpa had a small dairy farm and grew a huge garden including his own pipe tobacco.)

You can take the girl off the farm-(we left when I was 5) but you can't take the farm outta the girl and this acre proves it.

Rick too-his Maternal Grandpa ran a hog farm.

I'm not letting anyone dampen my enthusiasm, I'm going ahead with this.

 Lois

Good on you yugogypsey, I think people like your sister-in-law? are only jealous, and they would probably would like to do what you do.

Sounds to me like the poor woman has terminal affluenza - I'll bet she even buys ice from the supermarket!!!! Sadly the cure is very difficult - most times impossible, and many people catch it - except for those innoculated with good old fashioned common sense, practical skills, a sense of self worth and desire to have a world for our children to live in with their children!! Thank goodness you had the innoculation!!! Don't waste your energy trying to convert her - just lead by example and hope she catches on. Believe in yourself and what you do and don't let anyone bring you down.

If its any consolation we are considered so wierd in this place that we are sent "poison pen" letters - the thing is we just find it funny!!! Our rection was simply to post it in a public place along with our reply then stand back and watch everyone deny sending it and agree with everything we say!!!

Keep up the good work gal!! You have support here!

Helem and Chris: i can't believe that there are people so small minded that they would bother sending you poison pen letters!!

Did they come from the local t****s managers or something?!

Edited to asterisk the naughty word - what happened to the filter?!

Rick's sister has a terminal case of "city-girl-itis" She likes the convenience of walking out the door and catching a bus-being Gemini, she is a "perpetual student" of journalism she says-might do her more good to study life for a while.

That is a very sad state of affairs... :?

A sister blocks a brothers email because she does not want to get what she considers spam emails???

Spammers shit me too.

Do your thing. Enjoy every minute of it, but don't for one minute think you have everything sorted and are able to tell everyone else what's right, what they should think, or how to live. That's just ego running amuck.

I agree with your lifestyle efforts and your enthusiasm is great. But - you aint God girlfriend, and you're gonna make mistakes. We all do.

Maybe this is one of them? How is bagging out your blokes sister helping to change this world?

Send the girl the fruit...
