I love it as well - mainly because everything was so in tune with the seasons - people timed their activities not by the clock or the calendar but by the changing landscape: "sow barley when the oak leaves are as big as a mouse's ears" kind of thing. It really made me look at landscape in a different way.
Funnily enough, so do I!

Well I'd thought I'd just add a little here. I have been poking about this site for a while now, but thought this topic might be a way to get a bit of info from all you guys down under.

My husband and I are in Manchester at the moment, but (finger crossed) are hoping to move to NZ in the next few months. A lot of where we end up will depend on my job (in healthcare) but the long term plan is to find a small bit of land to have a small holding on.

I enjoy hearing of everyones' experiences around the globe, and I'd love to hear some of the Kiwis' thoughts on the best places to live in the So. Island and why (especially for those of us wanting to do the small holding thing). So far we are looking at pretty much anywhere along the East coast of the So. Island.

Hi Taralastair, from the east coast of the South Island, NZ. Welcome to the site and forum.
I live about 25km west of Christchurch in Ohoka, which is a rural area. Population of ChCh is just under 400,000. It depends on how big or small a property you want. There are a lot of lifestyle blocks out this way and some small farmlets out at Oxford, (other half hour further west). New blocks with bare land, (no house) will knock you back from about NZ$ 250,000, and then you have to build. The smallest new block is 10 acres. You can buy smaller, but these will be already established. The District Council does not allow new blocks smaller than 10 acres as this puts too much pressure on services. Outside of towns most properties will have their own bore/well and septic tank.
Climate: We have four definate seasons; Summer, Dec, Jan, Feb. Autumn; Mar, Apr, May. Winter; Jun, Jul, August. Spring; Sep, Oct, Nov. They do overlap.
November is usually hot dry, (Nor-Westers) and temperatures can get up to the high 30s. Most times high 20s. February is the best month of Summer. Winters can get cold and wet. The coldest recorded temperature in NZ is -24.1C, but that was down in central Otago.Though weather patterns are changing. We don't get extremes of weather like parts of the North Island. I have lived here around ChCh. most of my NZ life. The internet should tell you most of the property situations. Nth. Canterbury.
Look at these two sites.

Gidday

Well apart from an overwhelming reduction in density of people, the further south you go the less culture shock you will have and the climate tempature that is more close to yours now. Near the North Island cities you will find land prices much much higher so again that would be another reason for looking at the south.

I suggest that you find your job first. If you are any good and have reasonable qualifications you shouldn't have much dificulty in finding the job but our red tape can be a bit bloody anoying.]

Thanks for your replies. Yes NZ red tape - we know it well, but are nearing the end of if (I hope). Medicals are booked for tomorrow and then all forms will hopefully be sent off to NZIS. Here's hoping we'll be there for spring!
