Electric fence

HELP our bl**dy electric fence is driving me to drink. We put it up and Gladys the larger of the ladies just ran through it. Right, so we put in corner posts and strained the wire around them making sure that plastic rods kept the wires off the wood. (Everything is set up properly I think with insulators ets). Daisy the smaller lady put her head under one wire and stepped over the other two!! She squealed all the time as she received shocks but she got out. Is it them? We would really like to get them outside in the fresh air and let them eat all the lovely things growing in our field but until we can contain them we can't. I am of two minds whether to burn the fence!! Can anyone suggest anything!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm no expert on this - but is it working? I know that pigs can be hard to contain and I think it takes time to train them to the wires. Hopefully Stonehead or one of the other pig keepers will have some good advice for you.

A pig can stand a great amount of power from a fence. You certainly need more wires to actually stop them as long as possible.

hi ognen,

you need to train them to it by putting another fence a few inches behind it first. we had the same problem with our first lot of piggies. it doesn't have to be permenant just sheep netting or even chicken wire will do. trouble is it might be a bit harder now they've been through it

think we have the same problem now, our energizer died and the new weaners have been charging through the fence

a friend repaired the energizer but i've not had time to try it yet.

Thanks for that one and all. My son touched the conector (that goes to the fence) on the energiser by accident and received a v v powerful shock. So being a loving mum and all in the interest of experimentation I got him to touch the fence wire to compare shocks!! Yes I know, just be pleased Im not YOUR mum! He said the shock was a lot less from the fence wire and it seems that the earth pole should be also directly wired to the fence to increase the output there to the same as the energiser. Also if we wired metal rods to the fence at each corner it should bring the energy level up to what it should be. So we are taking on board everything said here and when we get our newbies in a couple of weeks we will give it another go!

Hi Ognen. Normally with an electric fence you use stand offs on the fence posts so that the electric wire is separate from the boundry fence. That way all the power is concentrated in the wire. You are probably losing a lot through the posts.

The earth is one of the most important parts of the fence system. You need at least one and possibly more than one 6 foot pipe driven right into the earth and then a very good connection from those to the earth wire of your energizer unit.

I don't know what you mean by those metal rods.
