Tatties in bags

Post: # 57256Post PurpleDragon »

Can someone please give me the complete idiots guide to growing tatties in bags?

How much compost do you plant them in? How high should you keep adding the compost when they start sprouting etc?

I can't grow in my plot just now (it died :() but I still want some veggies.

It's a fantastic wasy of producing very clean spuds :)

I started with about 6 inches of compost in the rolled down bag and rolled and earthed up as they grew.

There's another post on here about how often to earth up and I think it generally suggested little and often as they peek out of the compost otherwise they get set back if they grow a lot and then get shoved back into the dark.

That's brilliant, thanks for that.

Right - off to get some compost tomorrow. I have a whole stack of empty compost bags, so that's not a problem. How many would you think would go per bag? Would 6 plants be too many?

it rather depends on what size spuds you're after.....salad new potatoes put maybe four or five in, bakers, two or three.

I seem to remember monty don putting one or two spuds then later, when earthing up, adding a couple more further up the bag.
mind you, I'm not certain so if you don't have enough to risk experimenting, stick to the tried and trusted approach :?

I would imagine that you would get more spuds per plant if you put fewer plants in each bag. If you have plenty of bags then I'd just put a couple in each. I have some 25l bags and have put 2 spuds in each. About 6 inches of compost at the bottom then earth up as you go.
