After visiting London on numerous occasions and only using the tube it came as quite a shock to discover that walking can be quicker and far more pleasant. I always take an A to Z with me now, but first I check the routes on the transport for London site.
go to advanced optionson this page and type in where you want to go, say Euston to Kings cross and St Pancras and untick all the options but walking (scroll down) say that you will walk for 120 mins (maximum allowed) and it will give you a detailed map of your route on a pdf. - now if only they could do the same in other cities.

Does it tell you where the toilets are en route?
All walks in London suffer a sad lack of public conveniences. I always used to plan my walks with a cathedral mid-way just in case nature called. Cathedrals have public toilets. :)
But a great idea. I will use it next time I go to London. Thanks.

I went to a meeting in Central London yesterday - rather than getting a travel card, I opted for a straight return ticket and walked through the city and back; a chance to get some exercise (and take some photos).
It helps that I'm familiar with the layout of the city but I just took my A-Z and mainly relied on my sense of direction. If you have a good map, then this is probably better than printing a map each time (unless you are very methodical about filing previous ones away for reuse).

I know what you mean and I don't print off these maps and use an a-z instead. I do use these maps to see if a distance is walkable and how long it might take, also it points you in the right direction to start with. The trouble with walking in London is finding the right exit on tube and train stations this map can help with that too.wulf wrote:I went to a meeting in Central London yesterday - rather than getting a travel card, I opted for a straight return ticket and walked through the city and back; a chance to get some exercise (and take some photos).
