Progress from Miracle Acre

Post: # 52925Post yugogypsy »

Well folks, after 5 long years of cleaning and clearing and taking MANY truckloads of stuff to the dump,The thrift store and freecycling this place is finally starting to look like a farm instead of a scrap-yard.

We just had a load of wood chips delivered for mulching between the garden beds (Guess what Rick is doing later today? )

Another bit of junk went to the dump just today.

Our chicken coop is getting walls and windows, and the garden is looking great.

Take Care

Lois, can you post any photos? We love seeing those before and after photos on this site; it is very inspirational (and we are also very nosey!).

Well done anyway!

Yes, I will post pictures as soon as I get a scanner or a digital canera.

I've invested a lot on the property this year and no spare $$$ right now.

I can tell you we have 3000 square feet of garden in 4 sections, some on each side of the house and some out front.

And we're going to build some more cold frames at the back-because that gets the most sun.

 We're planting!

Peas, beans, collards, cabbages, marigolds so far. And my lettuce in the cold frame is coming up, but I've got to get rid of a slug who thinks its his salad bar! :angryfire:

We got more wire and have enclosed some more of the garden, the roof is on the shed, shavings are going down in the garden paths, its really starting to look good around here.

Next step after planting-walls for the shed and then demolish the back of the barn!

Lots of work, but lots of fun too, seeing it finally take shape the way I envisioned it 5 years ago.

And I found someone to take ALL of the rest of the junk!

Rick is planting edible pod peas today. Moon turns tomorrow and we're going to plant beets and carrots.

We're going in for purple veg this year, purple spuds, purple carrots, purple kohlrabi, purple beans and peas.

They all taste the same in the end, but why not have a little color in the garden while its growing?

Take Care All

Yeah, its a fun theme, and will interest my neighbours kids.

Strawberry plants, peony, lily of the valley and bleeding heart all arrived today.

Rick is planting the strawberries now. I'm going to make strawberry ice cream this summer! :icescream: Yum

We're still at it. Rick's digging the potato patch :dave: , looking like a hippy-its hot enough to put his hair in a pony tail and I gave him one of my kerchiefs for a head band.

Loved the discussion on vans "Am I Insane"-I'm getting one that will scream HIPPY, its got a white roof, burgundy and blue on the side with the silhouette of a donkey's head on both sides. It will be my all purpose vehicle and at nearly a quarter million kilometers, my car can have a rest.

 Got the lawnmower going yesterday , then worked on the spare mower, it needs a blade, but should run-its missing a couple of other small bits too so we decided to take it in to the shop.

The rest of the garden is doing great, all the new plants except the cucumber are doing well, we've been eating green onions and planting more as we go, I finally got a Welsh/Egyptian Walking Onion, its starting to make its buds now.

White currant has the beginnings of fruit on it, herbs are doing good, except my sage flowered this year for the first time. Makes the leaves a bit bitter.

Neighbour offered us some roofing we can use to rebuild the back of the barn, free stuff is always accepted if its useful, I just have to take my car across the street and get it.

PROGRESS, I Love it! :blob4:

 Lois

Erm - please miss, what is this? Are we back to our spuds running around the garden again?

No Zoe,

No runaway potatoes this time-look it up on Google, its a type of onion that grows its bulbs on the top and then falls over to re-seed itself.

The strawberries are straying out of their bed though.

 Lois
