My offering is one I have just adpoted as my siggie quote. I love it.
It comes from a lovely book by a Kiwi author, Feild Candy, who sadly died in the 1980's. His book is called Every Living Thing and is a delightful book full of short stories, some only a paragraph long. All about his day to day encounters with other creatures we share the environment with.

What appeals to me about him so much is that he did many things we do here daily - stopping work on a track through the gorse because of a birds nest in a bush, stopping work altogether to watch a cicada unzipping itself, and rescuing moths that have flown into the fire bath on a moonlit night.

It is a book well worth getting hold of for those with a love of the land and its inhabitants.
"...where there is no respect for an earthworm or any other creature, there can be no respect or hope for anything" - Field Candy

did a bit of googling and came across this made me smile :)

Gardening is a kind of disease. It infects you, you cannot escape it.
When you go visiting, your eyes rove about the garden; you interrupt the
serious cocktail drinking because of an irresistible impulse to get up and pull a weed.

The tree which moves some to tears of joy is in the eyes of others only a green thing that stands in the way. Some see nature all ridicule and deformity ... and some scarce see nature at all. But to the eyes of the man of imagination, nature is imagination itself.

Until one is committed there is always the chance to draw back; always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation) there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans; – that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would not otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision raising in one's favour all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance which no man could have dreamt would come his way. Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it! Boldness has genius, magic and power in it. Begin It Now.

The mind is like a parachute, works best when open.

I've no idea who said it, but I heard it years ago.
How hard can it be, how long can it take. What could POSSIBLY go wrong

Similarly:-

No one can play a ukulele without smiling - George Harrison

So, perhaps the way to a better world is for us all to eat homegrown tomatoes and play the uke everyday.

One that always gets me in trouble:

Let your tongue speak what your heart thinks. (Davy Crockett)

One that all car passengers should know when arguing about directions with the driver:

I have never been lost, but I will admit to being confused for several weeks. (Daniel Boone)

One that sums up my approach to a T:

You don’t have to be a fantastic hero to do certain things – to compete. You can be just an ordinary chap, sufficiently motivated. (Edmund Hilary)

And the quote I find most poignant:

I am just going outside and may be some time. (Lawrence Oates)

Hmm, a bit of an explorer theme there!
