Autumn Planting

Post: # 5973Post SUPEwoman »

Well I've done it. Dug up patches of my lawn for veg.

I've done a chequerboard effect (like square foot gardening but bigger) so I've got managable patches & am not daunted by a large area. I've dug down deep to break up the soil (which looks quite good) and just need something to plant. Any ideas?

I understand I can put in onion sets & some kinds of peas & carrots & will have to get out to buy garlic & greens (spinach). I've just set some radish. Anything else?

Thanks

I think (but not 100% sure) that you sow onion seeds in autumn, or plant onion sets in the spring.

Do you have enough growing season left for peas? At this time of year I would put in quick growing stuff like radishes, which you've done and rocket. Some lettuce such as cut and come again ones should be OK too or the winter variety. I don't know about carrots - they take quite a few months to mature. Mine are ready now and I sowed them in April and May.

I've never really thought about planting much in the autumn as I'm usually knackered after spring and summer and have had enough!!!

Thats great SUPE! I want to grow wheat on my front lawn but every time I broach the subject my wife threatens to have me committed

So I am stuck in the back yard!

Every year I plant onion seed in the autumn to slowly grow up through the witer so that I will have sets in spring. Doing pretty well this year, almost ready to go in!

good for you SUPE, this time last year I put in winter broad beans, winter cabbage, and red onion sets and ordinary yellow onion sets. In November I put in the garlic....I just put in some from the shop because I hadn't grown it before and it did ok but was very small. This November I am going to buy some special ones for growing. All of the other stuff survived the winter on my lottie...snow and all and I had a good crop.
