Not that I can afford many books, this is a very good site to find the cheapest online supplier:
http://www.bestbookprice.co.uk/
It also does CD's, DVD's videos and games.
Andy - perhaps this should be made sticky?

I'm not sure about 2nd hand books, but bookcrossing is a great way of getting more use out of them.
I like the book people, they're pretty good.
I see what you mean about small bookshops, but most of the cheaper ones are second hand books anyway. A lot of the time, i find them cheaper than the local charity shop too. Charity shops round here tend to charge a lot - especially oxfam!

www.greenmetropolis.com is another good site for second hand books. All books cost £3.75 including free delivery.
all paperbacks, hardbacks and audio books all cost just £3.75 to buy (and include free delivery on all standard sized paperbacks). Plus we donate 5p from the sale of each book to the UK’s leading woodland conservation charity the Woodland Trust, to support Woodland Creation.
