thanks for the advice - really useful.

yup i get teh bit about harems.. like hens really then. not sure how many I intend to keep yet either.
The old pigsty is large, but i was only planning on using part of it, building a smaller enclosure inside it, so could provide indoor and outdoors areas.

must finish building the hen run, but hmmm i do fancy keeping quails.. and raising them too perhaps.

Sorry to bring this topic up again. And really sorry I didn't respond to you Red, I haven't been online for awhile. I do still keep quail and planning on incubating my first eggs in a few weeks. Increase my stock a bit .

Has anybody ever had any luck naturalizing them? We hear the occasional bobwhite quail in the fencerow here, but they used to be everywhere. And I hear that naturalizing them is difficult because their "instincts have been bred out." Somehow I don't quite believe that . . . any thoughts?

Hi Red, I don't sell the eggs, Although I do give some of them away to family members, And the rest I use in the kitchen.

Eva, I'm not to sure naturalizing them, Ive never come across anyone who has done it. Or even read about it being done. Think I would agree with you about there instincts being bred out of them. Not really sure if that's possible. Although chicks that are raised in captivity could become to used to human contact, And that could cause a few problems for them in the wild.

Kev.
