101 uses for plastic milk cartons

101 Uses For is popular and let's hope it stays that way. Our second book is presently called 101 tips for self sufficiency; we will certainly dip into this section for ideas. So post away and let's try and get at least one thread up to 101.

I'm a water baby. I always take a couple of old plastic milk jugs to beaches and rivers. At least one will have plain water in it for rinsing off feet or found treasures. Others have scoops cut out retaining the handle so I can collect shells or stones or seed pods.

Empty capped milk jugs are used by some folk to float on their swimming pool's water. Tether them together with light cordage or anything. They insulate the water, prevent ice from getting too thick and solid, and keep out some debris, even if you use a pool cover. I suppose you could do this on defined area of a small pond if you needed access to the water through the winter.

When I kept aquaria, I'd pretreat some of my water and store in clean milk jugs for changing out.

I've used them to collect fluids that I amass slowly, but will need in some quantity. For instance, saving old coffee over several days to dye some white cotton.

Changing the oil in my car or some equipment, the jugs come in handy for bottling up the spent stuff to cart off to the recycling center.
