Happy Halloween

In the 'last harvest' and 'celebrations of light in increasing dark nights' kind of a way.

Hoping everyone is having a Happy Halloween,

There is quite a strong Scottish tradition with it (it's not all American) We have had the Guysers round, dooked for apples, put out the carved turnip (swede) and butternut squash and pumpkin, and have some mulled apple juice on the stove.

What have you done to celebrate?

We are having a bonfire and having the neighbours over, hot chocolate for the little ones and hot cider for the grown ups.

Had a few trick or treaters. So far it seems to be quite benign, no slashed tyres or eggs through windows (as we've had in the past). I handed out satsumas and they all said "thank you".

we always decorate the house (we even have a halloween box of old decs etc - just like the Christmas box!) and have a 'revolting' meal - we had worms and slime (aka tagliatelli with vegetable pesto sauce) blood bread (garlic bread with red colouring) washed down with bat juice (home made elderflower cordial with green ice cubes made earlier)

we have some witches and gouls knock on the door, accompanied by various mums and dads, and it was all very nice and friendly.

I carved one of my pathetically small and unripe pumpkins and my son said it looked sick, given the colour, so i cut a slice of green tomato and made it a tongue - that was a big hit with the kids as they came round and saw it in the window.

just got in (2am... pretty early) from a pub crawl!

For halloween I:
Carved a GREAT pumpkin (have no idea how to put pics up here...), had a nice dinner of traditional foods then dressed up as a pirate (it was a birthday party) went to b-day pub-crawl, then onto another mate's flat for a party then we all decided to go to MOSH (which is rubbish by the way...)... so yeah!

Been pretty entertaining.... I went as the ship's "wench" it was great!

Had a big dinner of stew and dumplings, a small pumpkin (it's the biggest I could grow) then dressed up and went out on the lash!

What have you done to celebrate?

Went to bed really early - I was so knackered from work... Still am, come to think of it. But that's why I'm up bright and early this morning.

I have a pumpkim box on my desk with some sweeties in it.

And now i have toothache...

The boys went out guising. That means dressing in costume and carrying a neepy lantern, both of which serve to confuse and drive off the sidhe (faerie folk). Then it's off to the neighbours for the boys to do their turns, singing a couple of songs and reciting poems in return for some treats.

As for apple dunking and apple peeling, how many people know they're actually ancient Celtic forms of divination?

The first person to bite an apple from a barrel of water will be the first to marry.

The longer your apple peel, the longer the life you will lead.

All good fun.

Oh, and Samhain is not until November 7 this year. It's the day that marks the midpoint between the autumn equinox and the winter solstice.
