Stonehead's updated job list

Post: # 76847Post Stonehead »

A chap is calling in tonight to do the cockerels for me, but I have a few other jobs to barter for if anyone is interested:

The last potatoes and artichokes were supposed to have come out last week, so I'd like them lifted. Happy to swap a swag of tatties and a few artichokes for planting in return for getting them out.

Five gallons of spicy potato wine to bottle in exchange for a few bottles of the brew.

Five gallons of parsnip wine to make in exchange for spicy potato wine, fresh veg or some of our relishes/pickles. (Not jam I'm afraid as we've swapped too much for labour and only just have a year's worth left.)

Beetroot to be lifted and pickled/turned into chutney. Can take some away.

And a really grotty, hard job. The boar pen needs to cleared of dung, the hut lifted and moved uphill, and fresh bedding put in so we can move Doris and her litter out of the byre. It was suppose to happen at the weekend but didn't and is a priority. Happy to swap pork, eggs, veg for this as it's a stinker of a job.

Hey, if that's the extent of your to-do list, I wouldn't mind some pointers on where I'm going wrong. We're doing a similar thing, albeit at the other end of europe, and my list is never-ending. In fact, I've taken to keeping the list in 3 sections, in different notebooks, just so's I don't keep getting phased by the sheer volume of work.

That said, if I was any closer I'd jump at the opportunity to work with spicy potato wine.

Look, that's nowhere near the full extent of my to-do list. That's priority items where I have things I can swap for labour. If I did swaps for all the work that needs doing we'd have no veg, preserves, meat, booze etc for our use over the next year.

I've spent a large part of the afternoon re-stacking straw bales, using a combination of left arm and hefty kicks with my good leg. It took a while and a bit of pain but it's done now, while I've also managed to re-bed one of the sows, get the chickens fed and watered, and a few other things.

I'm just having a cuppa and a break from the boys (had both home all day today), before attempting dinner.

When the OH comes in from work, she'll have a couple of minutes to say hello and then she'll be racing out to do many more jobs that I normally would have done during the day.

It's not about having the longest to-do list or being competitive. I'm just trying to see if anyone can help with a few jobs in return for some produce etc.

Thanks to Diana, the spicy potato wine is now bottled, a batch of tomato sauce is made and bottled, the sun porch is clear of tomato plants and associated scunge, the kitchen floor is vacuumed and swept, and several piles of washing up have been cleared away. (Note, most of the washing up was the result of the bottling and cooking the sauce - we did not keep a big collection ready for her!! Tempting as it may have been... )

Diana also fed the chickens and we have another 6lb of green tomatoes waiting to be made into more chutneys and sauces.

Many thanks for the help.
