I dont need any got loads... but my lad in glasgow seem to have a dirth ... none...he knows that he can buy them on the internet but wants to know if he goes into a bait shop can he buy the right sort ...
Or can I send them in a tub well sealed through the post will they be ok ?
If he buys them off the internet, they'll be sent through the post so I would think that it should be fine for you to post them.
I would suggest you seal them up well with plenty of soil and maybe some cotton wool or tissue paper to stop them rattling around in the tub. Make sure they aren't too dry or too wet as well and they'll probably need some air so I would make a few tiny holes with a needle in the top of the tub. I would wait until after the Christmas post, though, to make sure they don't get delayed.
Just had it confirmed that he will be down for Yule so he can take some back ... yey ... so if your on a train heading to Glasgow in the new year ... keep an eye out for red wrigglers... I will pack them as you suggest Zoe to keep them safe ...
i had visions of you at the post office answering those questions 'is there anything of any value in the parcel' and so on. or even worse if the parcel broke open at the sorting office!

you need to contain them in a container that you can put the same weight as them of damp peat into it also and make sure there is room for air in the container too.
spoke to him tonight ... I have a tub ... and will pop them and their bedding into it just before he leaves here I will make sure that air can get into it, then put that into a cardboard box for him to carry. The train journey takes 4 hours ...
I dunno why no worms have taken up residience in his composter? they were in ours like a shot and they can give the impression of live spaggetti when its opened ...
His compost may be too fresh (they don't arrive until things calm down), he may be on a concrete base, or his soil might have a vermitoxin in it. It's also possible he's composting something vermitoxic - for instance, there's enough pesticide on one non-organic banana skin to kill the entire contents of a worktop wormery!

Honestly? Blimming hell - shouldn't have any worms in my compost then... I don't eat non-organic bananas (and the organic banana skins are eaten by the goats), but I compost the office stuff as well...
