Related by marriage.

Post: # 81403Post Thomzo »

Guys
Since the first Mr Thomzo and I split up several years ago we have remained friends and I get on very well with his new wife. So well in fact that we go out on girly nights out together and share a love of modern jive.

When people ask how we know each other we get a bit stumped. She came up with "related by marriage" which I thought was rather clever. I do think, however, that in this day and age there should be a proper name for the relationship between a person and their ex-partner's current spouse or a current spouse's ex-partner (if you see what I mean).

Any ideas?

Zoe

hhhmmmmm - I guess it depends on the relationship. I know what I call my x-partners current spouse! :evil2:

And let us be kind
Let us be silly and free

It won't make us rich
But damn it how happy we'll be!

Well I must say that this is the first time I have heard of an ex-wife being friends with the new-wife. I don't often hear of the ex-wife even being on speaking terms with the ex-husband ...

You are still friends with your ex-husband and you are friends with his wife, so can't you just be friends?

She's not really an in-law, so perhaps that makes her an out-law?

However, unless you want to draw attention to the relatively unusual background, then perhaps "through a friend" would be simple, unremarkable and completely honest.

If it helps, polyigamous women call each other co-wives.

Given that there are so many second and subsequent marriages these days I just think it's odd that there isn't a term for the relationship. I quite like the idea of ex-wife-in-law or ex-husband-in-law. Bit of a mouthfull but could be contracted to exwil and exhil!

Cheers
