can you save the hat

Post: # 82153Post old tree man »

This is a photo of me and my hat, now i have had this hat for 10yrs and it fits me like a glove but Jane says its old and mishapen with a hole in the top, and she wants to knit me a new one (has anyone got a plain patten for a hat jane would apreciate it) so a compromise, if the majority says it should go so be it, i shall recycle it if not IT SHALL BE WORN. either way jane is knitting me a new one. Image

Dont foget the life of my hat is in your hands
thanks with fear :pale:

ps in the background you can see my recycled blind into a trellis

I definitely wouldn't chuck it out! Maybe patch up the hole, if you are feeling the cold (actually, I prefer wearing a headband because I need to be able to let off steam on top...).

Wear Jane's new creation on Sundays, to keep her happy, and hang on to your old one! :flower:

definitely a hat worth saving - am I alone in thinking it lends you a rather raffish Mujahadeen look? - it would go very well with an AK-47!

Oh.

Boss just caught me looking at the internet.

He's read the article and he's asked that I vote for him, he wants you to keep the hat.

My vote: Keep the hat for everyday. Have a new one for special.

P.S. like the trellice.

keep and get a new one. A man can never have too many hats (tho he can, apparently, have too many heads).

Keep it, but occasionally wear the new to wear it in - one day the new one MIGHT just feel old and loved enough to replace its predecessor.

Keep the Hat
here's a pattern from a free pattern site

Materials:
- 1 skein worsted (Aran weight) wool, main colour (MC) [FYI: I used Rowan Magpie MC Brown, CC1 Cream, CC2 Rust]
- Odds and ends worsted weight wool for a couple stripes-Contrasting Colours 1 & 2 (CC1, CC2)
- Circular needle, 4.5 mm (U.S. 7)
- 4 dpn's, 4.5 mm (U.S. 7)
- Marker or loop of yarn
- Darning needle for sewing in ends

Gauge:
20sts and 28 rows = 4 inches on 4.5 mm circular needle

Read: If you're concerned about "colour jogs" (an uneven spot where colours join), please see Sarah Bradberry's helpful link at http://www.knitting-and.com/knitting/tips/jogless.htm (Thanks, Sarah!) [Note from Sarah: You're welcome Mark <G>]

Method:
Cast on 72 stitches onto circular needle. (Note: If you know how to do a Cable Cast On [found in most books or mags] the bottom looks much nicer!)
Being careful not to twist stitches, place marker, join knitting and work K2, P1 ribbing for 10 rounds.
Round 11: *k8, inc 1, repeat from * (Total stitches on circular needle should now be 81)
Knit 10 rounds of MC.
Knit 2 rounds CC1
Knit 2 rounds MC
Knit 2 rounds CC2
Knit 2 rounds MC
Knit 2 rounds CC1
Knit 10 rounds MC
Decrease Round 1: *k7, k2tog, rep from *
Decrease Round 2: *k6, k2 tog, rep from *
Decrease Round 3: *k5, k2 tog, rep from *
NOTE: At this point, the reduced number of stitches may make working on the circular needle difficult. Transfer stitches to the dpn's and carry on as though you were still working with the circular needle.

Decrease Round 4: *k4, k2 tog, rep from *
Decrease Round 5: *k3, k2 tog, rep from *
Decrease Round 6: K2tog all the way around
Knit one row even

Finishing:
Leaving tail, cut yarn and thread through darning needle. Run needle and yarn through all remaining stitches (don't miss any!) and pull tight. Run needle through the "donut hole" at the top so that it's inside of beanie. Darn in all ends

I'm Russell's sister and if you knew him like what I do, you'd know that the boring old hat is just not him! I think he should have something much more colourful and flamboyant. The more recycled bits it has the better! Sos Jane I could share the job wi you!.

Having had the Other Half replace by much loved and well worn Akubra with a new one, I vote firmly for retaining the hat. Samson was never the same after his hair was shorn off, I was never the same having had my hat removed, and you'll never be the same without yours.
