Does anyone keep cows down your way helsbells? We find them in our neighbours field where she keeps young heffers. Our neighbour is more than happy to let us pick them - until we came she would kick them away - what a waste! She thinks were a bit touched to eat them.
I agree, they are delish just sauted in butter and garlic. We've also made soups and fritttata and usually mix in a few dried ceps for flavour.

Puffballs tend to grow on short grass (heathland) or pasture land and if you live in the towns or cities try your local golf course, the best time to forage for them is from late july onwards. there are woodland species but don't grow as big.
