ehm nev..........I am brave enough to disagree that you have to try to spindle BEFORE the wheel ;)
spindles have their own lovely place where wheels let go.
little did the inventors of the spinningwheel know hehehehe
but indeed, it is true that spindles where the first tool before the wheel came.
did you know, before middle ages, there were NO spinning wheels.
imagine, how the sails of ships were made........out of stuff spun on SPINDLES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! still feels me with awe.........

I just wanted to make the point that I had tried the spindle after I was proficient with the spinning wheel and found that I had no patience for getting used to the spindle. I suspect that I would have made a better go at it if I had not used the whell, because the wheel is so much easier and less frustrating to use.
Yes, I have only admiration for those hardy souls

I'm with Nev here - I tried the spindle and it was hard going, at least with the wheel we can turn out something resembling yarn pretty fast
but the spindle is cheaper and more portable. and squeaks less.

oh but the wheel is my main tool too..........otherwise I would not be able to produce anything anytime soon .......spindle IS slowgoing ...where I can do minimum 100 grams on wheel it is 25 grams on spindle a day!
spindling is much more of a skill.....if you want to be speedy, that is.
wheel is faster and for some easier to start on......was one of those too, admitted.....
but I know of people who get a sweater done, in three months, spindling AND knitted!!
it is great to take a spindle along when you need to kill time.
great talking point......or just enjoy everybody looking in awe hehe....

I'm a fan of the hand spindle - I learned it for doing Medieval and Viking re-enactment (did you know that 2,000 fleeces go into making one Viking sail?).
I find I can get better control with the hand spindle than I can at the moment with my new wheel - but the wheel does look rather wonderful in the corner of the bedroom, and I do have a large stash of gorgeous caramel coloured Afghan hound fur to practice with.

I think my problem here is that I don't feel the urge to produce anything in particular, I'm just enjoying processing the fleeces and ending up with yarn.
It's therapeutic and productive in it's own way - I can always knit or more likely crochet something later on, I do have a problem with dyes though - I would love to use natural dyes but there's the problem with the heavy duty mordants
The original idea was to make felt
