I have grown "Conventional" beetroot for some time but just ordered some White and Yellow beetroot seeds to try.

Is there any difference in taste ?

Thanks all
Like all things I think it's down to the variety you grow rather than the colour. As has been said a lot of old varieties started off different colours and better flavour, but modern selection has bred out flavour in place of productivity and a more "appealing" colour. A classic example is the bloody Elsanta strawberry, yes it looks nice and red and juicy, yes the supermarkets love it because it is more robust and has a longer shelf life, but they taste of water!

Back to the question, I am planting for the first time this year Burpee's Golden beetroot, why this one?, well MOH dislikes the effect purple beetroot has when cooked, it discolours everything (if you know what I mean), she finds it very disconcerting!. So I looked for a non purple variety. THe Burpee's golden is said to have a supurb flavour, keeps it's colour on cooking AND very importantly the leaves are also excellent to eat, as we prefer beet leaves to spinach. I'll let you know how it goes
It's not easy being Cheezy
So you know how great Salsify is as a veg, what about Cavero Nero, great leaves all through the winter , then in Spring sprouting broccolli like flowers! Takes up half as much room as broccolli

Thanks all for your input....

Like Cheezy MOH does not like beetroot, but to be honest that leaves more for me so I can live with it. As for the coloured by-product, I know what you mean, last year I gave some to friends who had never tried it.... they had a trip to casuality early next morning with what they thought was a symptom for internal problems.... maybe I should have warned them but how do you say "Tastes great but ! "

I would never think of warning anybody - where have they lived that they don't know what beetroot does to them!

Actually the shop stuff never did, but once I grew my own (and ate more) I find myself giggling on the loo!

I had a similar experience once, but that was after 6 pints of snakebite and black (half cider, half lager, blackcurrent cordial)... I was in no fit state to understand that it was the blackcurrent...oooohhhh, I feel odd just thinking of that night.... ohhh deeeaarr... My first and last experience of Tequilla as well.... :pale:

I had never had fresh (ie not pickled) beetroot, until last year, and even then, it is always vacuum packed Lidl stuff (19p a pack) I have never tasted proper fresh beetroot  ... with any luck I will this autumn

Beetroot.
Last year I grew yellow cylindrical beetroot ok when small but, when they grow to full size they are stringy and tough. Not a viable crop, once used to feed swine!

Oh me too! I would be interested in hearing this too.
Yes, Peggy Sue, it is a root veg and IMO far easier to grow and nicer to eat, raw or cooked, than celery.

Not yet tried parcel but have a pack to try this year.

I grew white beetroot once but didn't like it very much, though I like the red stuff.

Heheh my old "weapon " of choice the Purple Nasty, the blackcurrant never effected me though. Other versions were the Scrumpy Nasty, which was stronger and far more devistating the next morning, as you clutch your head and stomach. Or my particular fav. the Extra Nasty, good to make up for house party's as a sort of "punch" this is based on Merrydown and Carlsberg special brew with a touch of ribeana (for the vit C of course), always remember to wash the jug and stirring implement straight after you have mixed it, cos next morning you'll find both welded to the work top, strange effect.

Ann when you get some fresh beetroot, you've got to try roasting it with garlic and rosemary, and a touch of balsamic vinegar..hmmmmm

I am planting cylindra beets this year and am looking forward to seeing how they turn out.

Now that blackcurrent cordial sounds very interesting!

I think it's the same - round root veg usually dark red which 'bleeds' all over the place!
