It looks great Oldfella.

We have not got into drying foodstuff as yet but your idea has got me wanting to do it now.

I had already planned something on that idea though. As a carpenter I use a fair bit of wood so have had an idea to build a wood drying Kiln. Based on the same principle as your dryer I suppose.

Timber that has been commercially kiln dried has used a lot of energy on the way from cutting to your builders merchants. Natural seasoning takes one year per 1â€

We used the dryer last year and it works very well and the design is that of EBEN FODOR. Google it and you find enough detail to enable you build your own dryer. Or pm me and I can send you more details There one or two things you should consider before you start, for example if you have a fairy large piece of glass laying around, then build your dryer size based on that, saving yourself money, remember also that the trays when full are quite heavy so keep them to a reasonable size. During the days you are drying you need to turn the dryer to follow the sun so again size and weight matters, the size given by the author is a good guide. As a guide for temperatures reached, last year in an outside temperature of 28c it was inside dryer temperature of 51c. One other point to think of is where you keep it in winter, I myself built it out of waterproof material and keep it outside. If you want help please do pm me.

My attempt at a dryer

Post: # 97447Post duncang »

Morning all,

That dryer looks great!!! A very different design to the one my mate Steve and I built

Image

My full blog and more photos here: http://livinggreener.blogspot.com/searc ... ar%20dryer

I was actually asked to demo it last summer at the Bir Green Gathering at a stand called the Big Green Idea (set up by Bridgit Strawbridge from tv series "It's not easy being green")
I wrote a how-to document which you can download from here:

For those interested there are a few more pointers about it on a factsheet that can be found (along with many others) on this page:
http://www.thebiggreenidea.org/factSheets.cfm
(look for "Building a solar dryer" under "House and Garden")

Let me know what you think!!
