Allotment
Carrots
parsnips
leeks (very small and in my way. I'm wondering if I can move them :? )
Savoy
calabrese

At home in the greenhouse (or at least, this is what was growing yesterday. Haven't checked today's slug damage yet)
more calabrese
peas
cauliflower
spring cabbage
carrots

I don't think we've had any frosts here in Hull yet - in fact I don't even think it's very cold. Last night's wind was a bit rough though.

Just to nit-pick but the Turnip is a different plant to the Swede and rutabaga. But then again the rutabaga is also known as the yellow Turnip.
The Turnip is quicker growing, usually smaller, white fleshed and not as hardy as the Swede/Rutabaga. My partner is from St Albans and won't go near the Swedes (maybe its a northern thing), but I love them mashed with salt & pepper.

Anyways, in my garden at the moment:
Garlic (for next year)
Sprouts (I keep pinching some although I am trying to keep them for mid winter).
Purple sprouting broc for the spring - looking good so far.
Spring Cabbage
Savoy Cabbage
Leeks (some are pretty big but starting to bolt)
Celeriac
Swede
Fennel (invented a Fennel, Celery and smoked salmon soup last night - went down a treat)

In the greenhouse:
Pak Choy (getting a bit chewed up now with the slugs and caterpillars)
Mixed salad leaves
Rocket
Dill
Lemon Grass

I aim to sow Rocket, Coriander and some more oriental greens if I get the time this weekend.

Walked around the garden this morning after storm force winds yesterday and found, not unexpectedly, that the runner beans are now finished .. all the leaves stripped off, but still quite a number of "old" beans that should hopefully still ripen to give me seed for next year.

Still growing in the garden are;

autumn sown onions from seed
autumn planted onion sets
red garlic
white garlic
shallots
sprouts
red sprouts
beetroot
chard
oca
savoy cabbage
weeds (like Shirley)
edit later cos I forgot ... 2 varieties of leek, Bulgarian giant and good old Musselburgh

In the polytunnel;

runner beans
climbing French beans
celery
tomatoes
last few summer lettuce
winter lettuce
mange tout peas
onions
cauliflower
cabbage
carrots
courgette
sown but not up yet ... broad beans and peas

In the orchard;

autumn raspberries (looking a bit sad after the wind but still fruiting)
myrtles (absolutely loaded with fruit)
figs

Maybe a bit over the top compared to some, but then I do grow ALL the veg we eat, apart from mushrooms, so no veg in the garden means no veg on the table.

Yes, In Scotland we call that a turnip - this wiki page shows what we Scots call a turnip. It is the vegetable that we also carve out for halloween, we have it mashed alongside potatoes and haggis (Haggis, neeps and tatties) Or mixed with carrots and potatoes in clapshot.

It's a Scottish thing, and often confuses... eventually supermarkets up here have started labelling them 'Turnip' with 'Scottish' in brackets underneath

I'll have no picking of my nits :flower: :flower: :flower: :flower:

I thought neeps were turnips as we know them in England - if not, then why is NEEPS logo of a (southern) turnip? It has the white and purple flesh and is much smaller than a swede/rutabaga which is more yellowy brown outside.

I think we've all got confused over the issue loads of times on this forum over the years! I am so confused about French rutabaga (southern swede  ) because it is WHITE fleshed inside!!! and tastes like shite!!! They should have yellow flesh!

And then again I have to fight with my ma in law who calls the two veg the other way round - maybe it is a Derbyshire thing where she was born, I really don't know, but she has lived 80 years in Notts and her husband knows which one is which (the same as I was brought up to call them in Bucks).

Anyway I just stay clear of both of them these days! :pukeright:

Well I guess there are different varieties of each but that wiki page has it right, I am sticking to calling it 'rutabaga' from now on, seems to cause less confusion. (plus it is a much nicer word)

Aha, the Wiki page says that the Scots call BOTH of them neeps. Now that might explain the confusion!

I have a list of rather pathetic things that didn't ever really make it that are still being picked like carrots (that went in very late), celeriac and celery- both miniture, beetroot I have some genuine hope for.

Then there's the good stuff like Parsnips, kale, parsley (now a bush!), land cress and chinese cabbage.
There have been a few brussels but they are tiny, and i suspect they aren't going to be tight.

Oh yes and I have one tiny aubergine left to pick at home (must do that before the frost tonight) and chillis which are now indoors.

Not as much as this time last year I believe.

This has been a real experimental year. Next year's when we really get going. However, we still have rhubarb. Then there's the spinach, thyme, sage, flat and curly parsley and oregano. Plus the white and purple sprouting brocolli (which the cabbage whites reduced to skeletons) are doing great and putting on loads of sprouts.

Really looking forward to next year and my new raised bed system

I tried Apsaragus Peas this year - they grow ok and the yield was ok too. Trouble is they taste like, er, nothing! If they got over 2 ins (5cm) long they went really woody and inedible. Won't give them space next year!
Luckily when we got invaded by rabbits they loved them! - so the other(useful) veg got ignored.

I think I can add them to a list of 'cannon fodder' for pests. Rabbits will eat them in preference to loads of other things.
In that same club is Kohl rabi - slugs will devour then in preference to anything growing next to them. Shame though cos I really like kohl rabi.

Well now that the weather is finally turning a little hard...

Lambs Lettuce
Kale
Cabbij
Leek
Rocket

and that's about all!

And even some of those have to be put to bed under a fleece every night!
