Re: What i'm brewing at the moment
Hello - I've been reading the forum for a while now and I've finally plucked up the courage to post!
What's the method/ingredients for the Ribena wine please? I've seen it made with jars of blackcurrants, but I'd like to take a look at the proper Ribena method.
I'm about to brew banana wine. Can't get hold of any grape concentrate so going to use grape and pomegranate squash. I'm not sure this will work....

Hi Robert, welcome to Ish
I can't really help with your question but I'm sure one of our resident winos..... errrrrm experts will be along soon.
We have some Vimto wine brewing at the moment - I don't hold out to much hope for it's drinkability really - I can still smell that overpowering vanilla-ey smell even though it has been in the demijohn for months. It's still fermenting after about 4-5 months, although it took about a fortnight to start.

Re: What i'm brewing at the moment
Hi Robert and welcome to ish
Hope this helps
This is one of the original recipes I have, the other uses 1.5lb of sugar
One 12oz bottle of Ribena Blackcurrant juice will make one gallon of wine. Dissolve 1.5 kilo (3lb) of sugar in some warm water, and add the blackcurrant juice. Bring to the boil and simmer for 10 minutes to drive off any preservative, cool, and pour into a gallon jar, filling it to the shoulder. Then add your chosen wine yeast, juice of half a lemon and 1tsp of yeast nutrient. Insert the airlock and stand the jar in a warm place for fermentation to get under way. When the first vigorous fermentation has died down after a fortnight or so, top up the jar with water to the bottom of the neck and re-insert the airlock, then continue with the fermentation in the usual way
I actually used supermarkets own 50% Hi-Juice cordial, it came out rather sweet. I’ve also tried it with 1kg sugar, 1 bottle of cordial and two litres of red grape juice. Again, very sweet, strong black-current flavour and slightly too strong alcohol for my tastes.
Good luck with it and let us know how you get on.
Hope this helps

Re: What i'm brewing at the moment
Brewing 2 litres of red grape home grown.
1 demijohn of rose grape home grown.

Re: What i'm brewing at the moment
We had a freezer clearout yesterday - I found 13.5 lbs of fruit at the bottom. That's 9.5 lbs of blackberries, 3 lbs of plums, 2 lbs of sloes and 2 lbs of rowanberries. So that's all gone into the 5-gallon bin with a couple of out-of-date litres of blueberry juice (with a bit of elderberry in that). Plus all the normal stuff like acid, sugar, etc.
Any offers as to what I should call it? Apart from a mess?
Mike
EDIT: Ahhhh - advancing age strikes!!! That is, of course, 16.5 lbs of fruit.
