One of them once asked why I came on the bus to school. When I told him I hadn`t got a car he looked thoughtful for a bit then said,
"I`ll get you one, what sort do you want?"
Knowing his recent history of `taking and driving away` I had to be really firm and convince him that I didn`t really want one - honest!

I Love it!

You must have been a pretty cool teacher Merry, cos I don't think everyone would get an offer like that!

I don't drive either. I failed my test three times and decided that it wasn't something i'm supposed to do.

I think people think non-drivers are lazy because they feel obliged to offer them lifts everywhere. I usually politely turn them down, proclaiming that i actually enjoy walking.

For me, walking is enjoyable, it allows me to take in the countryside around me and ejoy things. I have a wait of about 45 minutes between getting to the bus station after work, and the bus coming. I like thos 45 minutes! It gives me time to sit by myself and read a book, or listen to some music without someone interrupting. Drivers (that i know - the pushy ones) don't seem to enjoy that kind of thing.

I guess the problem is there are a number of non drivers who beg lifts all the time, ask for people to go out of their way to accomodate them, and then are smug about not having a car. It's unfair to tar everyone with the same brush.

thats the attitude that anoys me in many drivers, they think that you need the lift, and then are seeing you as somebody who can't help themselves, rather than a person who is able and willing to do without.

We are a 2 car family

We work in opposite directions to each other. OH works about 40 miles away and has a company funded car which we don't pay anything for.

I work 17 miles away, but in the opposite direction to OH. I drive a 10 year old diesel 4x4, which is actually used as it was meant to be! I pull a trailer, go "off road", drive to the recycling place in it, put the dogs in it, and drive to work in it.

I'd use public transport, but since we live out of the way, there really isn't any.

For me to get to work, I'd have to walk 2 miles into the village to get the bus south to the next village. Once there, I'd have to wait 30 minutes to catch a bus north (to go past where I live) to where I work, but the bus goes past where I work into the town. So I'd have to get off the bus in the town and get another bus south to where I work.

It's honestly much easier and quicker to drive the 17 miles in half an hour or so.

We don't really use either of the cars at the weekend, as we walk into the local village (2 miles) to do our shopping (at the local shops - we're a supermarket free zone). We try and buy anything else we need on the internet, as I'm not a fan of crowded places and lots of people, as it makes me feel ill....

I'd like to not have to use my car as much, but since both me and OH need to work full time, we've not got much choice.

Never been called lazy for not having a car, in fact quite the opposite. I enjoy walking and cycling all over Bristol - although I do use the local train whenever I can as much to support the line as anything. The unfortunate thing about Bristol is all the underpasses and dodgey 'looking' places. It is not good to walk under the M32 at night nothing has ever happened but it always looks like it might.

I perposley ensure that I live in places that I don't need to drive in. Although there seems to be an adversion to walking anywhere in Bristol, you ask for directions and get told where the nearest bus stop is to somewhere even if it is only 10 mins walk away. One of the famous men of Bristol Mr Isambard Kingdom Brunel used to walk everywhere often over 15 miles a day. It means he must have spent much of his time walking. Obviously it honed his mind.

Thanks hilldreamer I know that I'm not lazy but sadly alot of the people round me ( family) don't seem to think so. I think I am tarred with the same brush as my father, who was alot like me a non-driver - we never had a car- was not a fan of working for other people, but was a hard grafter, and never conformed.

Why I can't understand peoples prejudice is that I always had a happy life and never wanted for anything, and now my family is the same we are not rich but we don't owe a penny, we live well by our standards not other peoples. There seems to be such bitterness towards people who live differently.

sorry I 'm ranting it's touched a nerve

Dibnah, I gotta say, that in my experience, a lot of other people's bitterness or adverse feelings are simply in my perception of them, even in the expectation that that is how people will treat me.

I generally find that if I approach people without judgement, then they seem to regard me in a similar way. Conversely, when I expect people to be negative towards me, them wouldn't you know it - they are.

Talking of driving; this sort of thing is very evident when I drive; it's a sort of inverse law - if I drive in a bad mood, then everybody else on the road seems to be in a bad mood too. But if I drive unjudgementally, then everybody else's driving improves.

'Course it's not an unbreakable rule - some people just are naturally miserable old gits (QUIET, Boots). And I don't know any of the history between you and the people you are talking about, but in fact I think there are really very few without a bit of humanity about them.

Personally, I can't see why anyone would regard you as lazy simply for not driving a car. Unusual, certainly, these days, but that could be seen as an expression of interest rather than judgement.

Yes I agree I don't see them as fools or nasty, and I think I'm a fair person.
Possibly some people who have no wish or experience of different ways of life find it hard to understand why you would want to make life harder for yourself?
