Thank Goodness for the rain

Post: # 58024Post yugogypsy »

We're finally getting a downpour here, rain barrel is overflowing, garden looks greener all of a sudden-and of course, tomorrow is a holiday here and it may stay wet.

Good excuse for Rick to stay home and help me around the house instead of running off to other peoples garden work

Take Care All
 Lois

Now I'm not one to complain about the rain, normally, but I want it to stop. NOW! We've really had quite enough, the soil was already lovely and moist and now I've been out and got drenched letting the ducks and chooks out and there's another 18mm overnight and it is still pouring and thundering.......

My poor mum's here on hols and we'd like the sunshine to come back!

Ok, yeah, I think we've had enough for now! I said ENOUGH! It rained so hard yesterday I couldn't see the houses opposite. I don't think I've ever seen rain so heavy in the UK. My patio slopes towards the house (I didn't put it down honest) and it was about 2 inches deep in water.

Has any body out there been flooded?

I got flooded out of my tent on Thursday - now, i've got home and i've put it out to dry and what happens?! Oh yes - the bloody rain seems to have followed me home and is now filling the tent back up again.

As much as i love the rain, please make it stop...someone do some reverse rain dances or something!!

We're not flooded - but the river was fairly high for a while. Seen it worse though. Must say that I'd like some sunshine and a bit of warmth right now though. I hate the way the heavy rains make the drinking water brown and murky, and that's through the filter!

Last week the water table was really up as our cellers had water in them .. the first ime in 27 years...

I am sick of the rain ... every thing is wet and nothing is growing because there is no warmth ... the balance is all wrong ... :(
Our grass has a yellow look ... now thats weird ...

We had 30 minute monsoon on Friday, and this repeated on Saturday.

Saturday there was 2 foot of water flowing down the road!. Only lasted an hour before the drains finally caught up.

I nearly lost my hot box on the Lottie cos I'd put plastic sheet over the muck and tucked it inside the box. So when the monsoon hit the water built up on top of the box until it finally forced one of the sides out.

Luckly I managed to force it back enough to stop the whole of the contents flowing out :pale:

And if that isn't enough if you check out the Met office 5 day forecast, lots more rain for us, high winds, then Thursday night 1'C and potential Frost!!! so much for flaming June!.

On my walking holiday in the Peak District last week we had a good mixture of sun, showers and a couple of bursts of heavy storms (fortunately not too many of those while actually out walking!); we thought our garden would be getting a decent watering. However, from what the people back home are saying, it was pretty dry until the weekend - even if it is drizzing down tonight I might have to go out and do some extra remedial watering in the more sheltered patches.

Weather - you can't win, can you?! :flower:

Feels like its been raining for weeks here ... but everything is so green and lush that we can't complain. Best growing season for years ...

However, the Noah's Arc story does start to take on a certain resonance

Let us be lovely
And let us be kind
Let us be silly and free
It won't make us famous
It won't make us rich
But damn it how happy we'll be!

I wouldn't mind the rain if i knew that there were adequate catching and keeping systems in place.

We've got a water butt, and we keep the water to use on the garden when its dry.

Shame that the water companies aren't jumping up and down with joy at the fat that their reservoirs are being filled, and their water cathing equipment is getting a good going over. As it is, i still suspect we'll have a hosepipe ban later in the summer :?

Yes, so does mine. It's really wierd. You'd expect it to be a lovely dark green. The poppies took days to come out and then get the petals washed off them in minutes.

The animals all look like dried rats. I have to stand by the cat flap with a towel in my hand and catch them as they come in before they soak the house.

Red I have pegged my pumpkins down lightly to stop them flapping around. I just put a link stake on either side of the main stem.

Lack of sunshine and insects means my courgettes aren't getting pollinated and although I've got female flowers now the 'fruitlets' are just dropping off. :(

(I can't believe I have just complained about lack of courgettes!  )
