Hooray for the rain!

Post: # 56583Post wulf »

Yesterday's bank holiday brought, at long last, some welcome rain to SE London, UK! I must be turning into a proper gardener, now that I can rejoice in a wet bank holiday!

Yup, officially pee-ing it down.... :flower:

Garden paths flooded, water butts overflowing

Sadly we've also got pretty strong winds, so have had to go round with extra bricks and pegs to hold all fleece etc down, and check pea's etc for breakages....

Well we had about half a day of steady rain yesterday but the ground is still rock hard. Some of the water butts are still only half full so it clearly wasn't as heavy as it could have been.

It keeps threatening more but then it all comes to nothing.

No rain to speak of up here in Aberdeen shire. Plant pots are wilting  The river is very low as well. Apparently the salmon have run very early this year whihc means it's going to be a long dry summer 'cos apparently they 'know'

hrer they look at the trees and when they come out in leaf to tell the weather for the coming summer - the rhyme goes

oak before Ash - get a splash
ash before oak - get a soak

the oak was out first this year - so its only a splash, not a soak (but if you notice.. rain is forecast either way.. but hey.. it is England...)

We have had a good couple of days worth of rain here too and it is forecast for the rest of the week. It is good to appreciate a good downpour. I am just waiting for someone to say, "well that's the end of summer then".

I got soaked on monday morning, got caught outside and there was so much rain in my eyes that I couldn't see! Still must have been good for the allotment so I'm not complaining.

It makes a refreshing change to speak to people who aren't complaining about the rain on bank holiday. Most people here at work are whinging about it.

We need more!

Bone dry here - ok it's been showering a little bit this morning but nowhere near enough. The water is sputtering out from our taps - NOT a good sign. Anyone that bumps into me will just have to cope with the fact that I can't shower EVERY day or we'll just run out of the wet stuff.

It's quite depressing really - here we are in early May and already the well is low. We are on a private water supply shared with next door neighbour and a holiday cottage. Luckily the neighbour is very careful with the water too.

There is a threat of heavier rain on Thursday morning but who knows what will happen.

Woo hoo - we are in the middle of one of those run-out-and-dance-in-it rain storms - which I would if it wasn't so damn cold here today!! lol

But damn it how happy we'll be!

For gardeners it is a good thing to have a rain gauge, because there are times when it seems to be raining a lot, either a very heavy shower or light rain over a longer period, but the reality is very little rain actually fell!

My gardening magazine says -

3mm rain - keep on watering
7mm rain - keep on watering
10mm rain - don't need to water

(but it will depend on when you last got rain really, cos 14mm didn't do our ground much good last week!).

My pond/stream overflow is about to stop any day now - normally this would be in early June. :(
