Mine are in pots on the windowsill in a cold room. That way they can get started, but don't shoot up to quickly - well, that's my thinking behind it, but whether they agree with it I don't know!

Meant to show you mine yesterday - they are in the spare room, on a cold, cold windowsill, and the tallest is about 20cm!!! They'll need potting up soon, but it'll be a long time before they can go out into the garden.

20cm is good...

I'm hoping to plant directly into the soil... but will do a couple as a test in pots - will probably wait until I return from the funeral before I start though.

There should be some interesting notes to compare once this is over.

Entering the fray, somewhat belatedly, is my six-year-old niece, Niamh.
She planted several sunflower seeds (Giant Single variety) into yoghurt pots this afternoon as a chocolate diversion. They will be joining other seed trays in the Growhouse I blagged from my brother (assuming it's not been blown away by the morning). Mind you, no snow here but it's been so wet perhaps we should cultivate a cloud flower instead!

Into our cottage now and BT have eventually supplied a line, so yippee I'm back on the net. Little girl next door has just offered me newly sprouting sunflowers, so I'm declaring and interest in this competition! Will let you know when they were planted when I find out. Good to read all your news everyone. Sue

I haven't planted at all yet but still wish to be involved.
I have too much to do just now but hope to get planting later this week or next.

Mine are not about to win yet, a massive height of about 1 inch.

Can I join in too please?

Last summer was my first time with sunflowers and they were alright-ish about 1.6m tall. I experimented with time-lapse photography, hoping to see them track the sun or grow but with limited success.

I planted a few seeds in a progagator this week but nothing to see yet.

How many plants are we allowed to enter? If there's no limit, I could plant a thousand and hope for a freak.

Actually I'm not that competitive and don't have the space but shouldn't there be a limit to the number of plants each person can designate as their entry. Or maybe I am taking this too seriously.

I'd say, everybody just enters their tallest one! Don't think we've got a deadline yet - let's just wait and see.

(Ha, Andy - beat you so far: Mine is about a foot high!!!! And desperately needs potting up...)

I'm declaring a late entry! Do volunteer sunflowers count? I didn't get around to planting any sunflowers this year and owing to having changed the bird feed I have only 3 volunteer sunflowers this year, one of which has already been decimated by slugs. They're currently about 6 inches high. But having sprouted outdoors, they're hardended already and raring to grow!

I haven't yet even planted... and being down in manchester means that it will be Monday at the earliest that I'll get to do it.

I should get some planted down here too as a comparison actually!

Alcina... am sure that your bird planted sunflowers will be eligible so long as you promise to feed them a treat if your's win

Planted my seeds today. Think I'm a bit behind but it is done now.

Bear in mind - this is the first time I have ever grown anything from seed so if I get a plant I will be thrilled - don't care how tall it gets.

Oh I tell a lie. I planted a chestnut ( the eating ones you get at Christmas) in a pot on my windowsill when I was a little girl. I planted seedling in my Grandma's garden then a year or so later she had to go into a home, so we transplanted it to my Mum and Dad's garden. They moved home 9 years ago and we took the wee tree to the new place and it is now a pretty impressive chestnut tree. I have, of course, also planted cress and mustard.

I sowed some tomato seeds today at the same time. Fingers crossed.

Oh, good, I am glad other people planted theirs late too. Ours went in about 3 weeks ago so are still a bit weeny...I will be talking to them gently on a daily basis and trying to stop the dog from weeing on them. They should do OK with that sort of care!
