Tallest sunflower competition

Post: # 10259Post Andy Hamilton »

Brilliant Idea from shilz2005

Ok so we must all be truthfull here lets have a tallest sunflower competition. Has to be grow totally by organic methods and any variety can be used. Free to enter of course but everyone has to send a postcard to the winner with congratualtions on it. That way the prize is a different postcard from all over the place. We have to really have a time limit on it so when do you think?

sounds great Andy - (but I'm Shirlz not shilz! )

We obviously need to take into account regional variations in growing these things.. can we have a handicap for growing in the far north :flower:

kids and I picked one yesterday - well and truly by organic means and grown without water. self sown from cattle feed grew on the 20 ml of rain we had in November (only 3 ml once or twice since) won't win tallest but thought I would make a mention as half a dozen sun flowers in the middle of a dry paddock look a bit out of place.
ps the flowers are only about 3/4 metre tall.
pps now if there is a comp for tallest corn I might be in with a chance.

There was big tall sunflowers growing in the farmers field late last summer
in with the maze, but they would not be organic, they were very tall but any thing would be taller than me at a very tall  5 foot 1inch.

We will have to measure them I guess rather than look at the photos, tape measures on bamboo canes perhaps?

Great idea - all the kids should join in too - perhaps there could be a special prize for the kid with the biggest sunflower
