What I thought of Lush

Post: # 115128Post Millymollymandy »

I forgot to tell you but when I was in England I saw a Lush shop and thought of all you lot and had to go in and check it out!

I thought it was going to be something similar to the Body Shop but I was rather confused as to just what they were selling there. It looked like a sweetie shop quite honestly. there was a big pile of multi coloured doughnuts called Bath Bombs which seemed to cost about £5 (for one bath?!!) and some slabs of some murky coloured things and a few bottles.

I couldn't make a lot of sense of what anything was but in any case I couldn't stay longer because of the all pervading horrendous chemical smell that permeated everything and made me feel quite ill and in desperate need to get out and get some fresh air!

What is it all about? I think the body Shop smells quite nice and whilst I don't like that smell in dept stores perfume area as it is overpowering, it isn't (to me) the same nasty chemical smell that Lush smells of. I shan't go in one again!!!

On the same note, I also went into a Whittards as I have fond memories of this shop when it first started - I used to buy peach flavoured (real) tea and although I didn't at the time like drinking 'proper' coffee I just loved the smell of the coffee beans.

Now it seems to be 80% multi coloured bowls and cups and I had to look really hard to find any actual tea or coffee!!! And it doesn't smell anymore. I think it is sad. :(

One of the things I've noticed about being ish and "greener" is that I'm much more sensitive to highly perfumed things. We now don't walk down the cleaning products aisle in the supermarket - the smell is just to much! Even just the thought of chemical air fresheners makes my stomach heave!
I recently visited my sister and she is trying to be greener - but is having real difficulty letting go of things like washing powder and fabric conditioner - because she likes the smell! She also has a real thing for bleach - her entire kitchen smells of a swimming pool. I pointed out to her that those were not tears of joy, at having a hyper clean kitchen, in her husbands eyes - it was that his eyeballs were melting because of the bleach fumes!

I know there's alot of hype around L"sh and B*dy Sh*p but there's still (as far as I'm aware) SLS/SLES in their products. Each to their own but personally, I wouldn't touch either of them with a barge pole. (No offence intended!)

I think one of the main problems with places like Lush, the Body Shop and the soap powder aisle is that there are so many different scents concentrated in a small area and it becomes over powering - especially the sweeter fruity scents. I love the smell of body shop olive body butter and pretty much anything that smells of natural lavender - but the smell of one of the nut ones (Brazil?) and the dewberry/strawberry ones are just too sickly! :pukeleft: I guess it's very much a case of personal taste and sensitivity :flower:

I LOVE LUSH!!
I'm lucky enough to get a whopping 50% discount otherwise I couldn't afford it.
I like the fact that most of their products are Vegan and endorsed by The Vegan Society (living in Spain it is a complete mare trying to find vegan products).

My favourite products are:

Karma perfume (but NOT the solid one - it's rubbish)
Go Green solid perfume
Lip Squeak lip balm
Dream Cream (the most amazing body moisturiser IN THE WORLD)

But I do agree with the smell being too much...which is why they invented online shopping!!
YEEEHAH!

Edited to say: Shell - there's a LUSH in Dublin - not sure of the address mind you.

Lush make a product (called Dream Cream) which was the only thing that helped my psoriasis. At the point when I tried it I'd not been able to wear shoes for four years - try wearing flip-flops even in winter - and within a month I was wearing shoes again. As a result I became a complete Lush devotee; I used their soaps, shampoos, everything. Having said that I rarely venture into one of their shops these days (apart from to buy the cream) as, to be frank, they're really starting to get on my nerves. They constantly push their literature on you, telling of their 'green' credentials and banging on as if only they care about environmental issues when many of their customers shop there purely because of their packaging policy and are probably greener than Lush could ever hope to be. Last year they discontinued loads of long established products, just so they could introduce a range called 'Go Green' which, frankly, smells of cheap pine disinfectant. Many years ago I stopped shopping at Body Shop because they seemed to have lost the plot and Lush, in my opinion, are following suit. There seems to come a point in most 'ethical' companies lives when they become so terribly pleased with themselves that they lose the whole wider perspective - including respect for their customers, who they apparently credit with the IQ of a snail. I can think of at least one supplier of gardening equipment that appears to be heading down this road too.

I love the blackberry bubble bath bar. and the chocolate flavoured lip balm; I'm allergic to apricots and react badly to apricot kernel oil, but this lip balm doesn't contain any; unlike others I could mention.

going back to the whitards thing; it's sad that it doesn't smell of coffee any more, and also that it's gone more towards the pot side of things but I get my coffee from a deli in Colchecter called Guntons. It's a family run business on Crouch Street and it's the most amazing place EVAR.
wonderful coffee roasted on the rpemises, huge selection of cheese and interesting meats, home made cutneys, jams, local honey, hand made baskets from local craftspeople... and I'm going back on friday lol!
oh how I love my tea, tea in the afternoon. I can't do without it, and I think I'll have another cup very
