Hello from New Zealand!!

Post: # 9292Post Moorf »

Hi Everyone,

I'm Moorf and I now live in New Zealand, having emigrated in Sept 04 from Scotland, and before that London and West Sussex amongst other places and countries!

We live in the lea of the Southern Alps in the Canterbury region of the South Island of New Zealand. Hubby is in I.T and we have 2 acres, a vineyard, a rescue dog called Summer, 3 chooks (Priscilla, Penelope and Prudence!) and huge spiders... eek....

This is such a great site, well done!

I'm growing my own fruit and veg - currently have on the go: broccoli, red onions, white onions, sweetcorn, capsicums, beetroot, beans, lettuce, lemons, walnuts, olive, pumpkin, artichokes, tomatoes, celery and chilli's growing in the garden, grapes of course - 150 vines in total, plums, apples ... *pauses for breath*.. pears, cherries, currants, nectarines and my herbs... whew... oh and lots of weeds which I've yet to identify as they never look quite the same as they did back in the UK! Did I mention the spiders..

Well, thought I'd pop in and say hello.. or g'day... hope we can swap info and advice across the miles!

hello there morph. - I used to love morph as a kid in fact I think I still would if I saw it again. Before I read your post I thought that morph had made it over to New Zeland. SOunds like you are a sort of market gardener with 150 vines, so do you grow commerically or just drink a lot :drunken:

I am glad that I don't have to deal with strange weeds and spiders over here. Must make gardening a dangerous sport

Anywho welcome to the site

Hi Moorf, and welcome to the site!

How do you cope with the change from growing veg in the Scottish climate to New Zealand? Must be great to be able to do so much more... (Envy!)

Cheers
Ina

Hello Moorf,

I'd just like to say that I stood next to Tony Heart in a urinal in Bracknel once. It seemed an inappropriate moment to ask for his autograph. (Is this too much information?)

Anyway, welcome.

Firstly Muddypause - ROFLMAO!!!!

Secondly, WELCOME MOORF - I too enjoyed the pleasures of the bendy plastercine (sp?) man... And Andy, you do see him occasionally on kiddies TV.

Anyway, Moorf, I am sure you'll enjoy it here - the natives are pretty friendly... How did you get into the jammy situation of a move down-under?

Hi Moorf
Enough to keep you a bit busy. don't envy you when it comes to pruning. great gardening with the creepy crawlies. I have learnt that the spider under the sprinkler in the garden is harmless. just stings a little when I forget to check that he's there. as long as there are only spiders and no snakes.

Hi Morph and welcome to Self Suffish.

The Canterbuy region is great and was my favourite place when I travelled around NZ and Christchurch my favourite city.

Sounds like you have lots of work to do there but I bet you are really enjoying it.

Wow, what a HUGE welcome - thank you!!

Let's see if I can answer all your questions!!

Firstly, we lived in Worthing West Sussex, then moved to London, then Edinburgh, and finally settled (for 6/7yrs) in a wee village called Carnbo near Dollar in Perthshire about 10miles from Gleneagles. Loved it. We also lived in Kuala Lumpur but at different times!

But... as we saw it.. the bloomin' housing developers were slowly swallowing up the British countryside - closely followed by golf courses - and then T***o's ...and it was doing our heads in. So sad to see our beautiful land smothered. Anyway, we decided the only way we'd get what we wanted was to move away from the UK.

We decided against Oz cos of the wildlife and insects (sorry to any Aussies - lovely country - but I'm just not good with things like that!!). We considered Canada but that was too close to America (again, love the States, just wouldn't live there). So, we settled on NZ as it ticked all the boxes and had no dangerous insects. Well, there's one now, which is an import from Oz  which is the white tail. But even the bite from that isn't going to kill you!! I digress.....

No, we don't grow the grapes commercially - having only been in this house since December we're still on a steep learning curve!! I've been told we'll get about 10 cases of wine from the stock we have - watch this space!! :drunken: I suspect I shall have lots of grapevine queries - do we have any vineyard owners/enthusiasts/experts out there in forumland??

Well Muddy, I'm not such a shrinking violet  assumedly he had a spare hand to write you an autograph??? Mind you, I would probably already have been arrested for being in the mens loo.... Either that or I'd have been more coy, as when I approached that Jonny Morris from Animal Magic for an autograph when out walking on Brighton beach (oops, showing my age!) he told me to bog off (or words to that effect  ).

And what do I do all day? You mean apart from walking around and talking to (sorry, WATERING  ) my plants and walking the dog and marvelling at the scenery?? I write. And write. And write! After a career in marketing I've given it all up and am in the middle of writing 2 books (one fiction, one non-fiction), I also write press releases, articles and am currently doing a Journalism course with the London School of Journalism via distance learning, plus a creative writing course...!! I hate to sit still!!

Right, better get back to my veggies.... poor things are crying out for water.. it's been in the 30's for the last couple of days :tongue1:

Cheers all, and thanks again for the great welcome! What a great bunch!

Aw Muddy, the least ya coulda done was ask him to practice signing it on the wall!!!!

Hey Moorf! What a huge year you have ahead of you! It takes ages to learn how to care for everything when you buy a place that is 'stocked' so to speak. I lost quite a bit in my learning curve, but luckily most of them hung in there with me and forgave my blunders, and I told myself I didn't need/want/like the ones that didn't... Except the coffee. I cried when I lost the coffee... Goats love coffee apparently, but not as much as me.

Glad you're here! :flower:
