A friend of mine always chomps on a clove of garlic the moment he feels the onset, seems to work for him.....I'm too chicken, I'd rather have a cold
I cut out dairy just so I'm less gooey, treat aches with paracetamol and try to take it easy.

Re: Cold Cure?
Cider vinegar tablets help me but I take them all the time to keep the cold away. Lots of vitamin c, it's in all sorts of things, not just citrus fruits and most importantly, KEEP WARM.
Hope you feel better soon.

Yeah that really helps you sleep it off! Perhaps the only funny thing a ex-boyfriend of mine said, whilst lying on what could've been his deathbed (this was a man-cold you know), as I ran around adminstering various vile tasting herbal tinctures he mustered the energy to plead "just fetch me a beechams you witch!"snapdragon wrote:old fashioned beechams powder, spoonful of lemon juice, spoonful of honey, tot of rum or brandy, top up with hot water, wrap up warm

The domestos kills 99% of all known germs and the other 1% is too pissed to worry about.....

Lots of sleep. No dairy, no sugar, no caffeine. No refined or processed foods.
Lots of camu camu (Vit. C supplements), zinc.
Golden seal and echinacea.
Garlic helps me, too. So, does seaweed.
Lots of filtered water, some sunbaths.
No tv, no radio, no artificial noises.
If it's severe, no artificial lights.
Warm salt water or baking soda baths.
No phone calls. I cover my eyes and use ear plugs if I need to rest when there are distracting noises or light.
Depends on the severity. But living as simply and purely as possible and conserving one's energy for healing helps me the most.
Am sending you healthy thoughts!

Re: Cold Cure?
I always remember what my mum used to say. If you don't treat a cold it will last a full two weeks. If you do, it will only last a fortnight.
Viruses have their course to run and you can't make your body react differently to them in order to speed the healing process. You can boost your immune system which can help you avoid catching them in the first place or, if you do get them, help your body fight the illness more efficiently and without too many extra ill effects, but if you're getting symptoms you're already too late.
When you treat a cold, what you're treating is the symptoms, not the cause. Hot lemon and honey can help a sore throat. Avoid paracetomol unless you really can't function or sleep, the reason being that paracetomol reduces fever, and the increase in body temperature is part of the body's way of fighting the virus. So by dropping the temperature, you're inhibiting the body's natural processes.
hth, and sorry to be all doom and gloom

Re: Cold Cure?
I dont know of a cold cure. But I know of two sure fire ways to make sure you never catch a cold.
The first one: an old chap in Ireland taught me how to stop yourself getting a cold. The trick is keeping the neck warm. And if you wear a scarf all winter, colds just wont develop. It's as simple as that. You'll never get one again. I tried this out for a few winters and it worked a treat. Not a sniffle. Now I know this isnt practicable for most people so there is an alternative which does almost (almost) as well. As soon as you feel that cold in your throat, wear a scarf non-stop until it's gone. The cold just wont develop properly. You'll feel a bit daft, but not as daft as those who have snuffly noses and bad headaches.
The second one is even more sure fire but probably even less practicable for most: I havent had a cold in eight years. Not a one. How so? Just move to France (or probably any other country). Unless you come into contact with English people who have a cold, you wont catch one. I dont know why this is and it sounds like a joke. But it's true. After having 3 or 4 colds a winter, for all the time I was in France I didnt have a single cold. The French would come down coughing and sneezing and it just didnt pass on to me. Of course now I've moved to Sweden, it remains to be seen whether their germs are more of a match for a chap brought up on tough old British bugs...

Re: Cold Cure?
Oh the Englishman could not be called romantic
His technique is not particularly good
All the French and the Italians chase their women round like stallions
But the Englishman's a suet pud
And the slightest demonstration of affection
He regards as being rather infradig
He says the way the French behave is absolutely nuts
He'd like to try it really but he hasn't got the guts
He's scared to death the neighbours might be told
The Englishman with his usual blood cold
I wear a polo neck shirt every single day of the winter, and I don't get colds either.
And Clara, there's no need to be so snide about 'man-colds'. It's an entirely different virus and much, much more debilitating than the one women get.

Re: Cold Cure?

Get blowing yer Penny whistle IP. I know it might be the last thing you feel like doing.. but.. when I get the cold, I struggle to blow my pipes, after a few tunes, bit of a blow.. I do start to feel better.. it loosens the mucus and gets things moving along.. Word of warning tho.. don't over do it.. a few wee blasts is enough, everything in moderation
Also steaming ( no.. not on the drams!!) over a bowl of hot water and a few menthol crystals helps along with the hot lemon and honey drinks already suggested.
Hope you feel better soon
