organic dressmaking silk

Post: # 136018Post buzzybee »

hello all, its a while since i've been on here but google reminded me whie i was searching away. excited to say that i got engaged at christmas, and it has been a long held dream to have THE dress made by a friend if possible, as I dont want a massive meringue and I woud rather be worked on by a friend than a stranger with a tape measure. this decision is also to do with te materials that go into wedding dresses, having written my dissertation on eco textiles I feel a bit bad about the most important dress I will ever buy (apparently) being made of piles of completely unethical fabrics. I've read quite a bit on both sides of the peace silk argument, which confused me somewhat as im not sure which way i want the silkworms to die, but its becoming more apparent to me that peace silk is probably also the more likely to be organic/fairtrade. what I wanted to see if any of you knew was where i can get any of the flippin stuff? I've found a couple of suppliers, but they seem to be in the states. If i have to use them i may do, but i'd a)prefer to use a UK supplier and b) like to have more of a selection to choose from! I'm also looking at other fabrics for the underparts of the skirt etc, so links to places that sell these would also be good!thanks in advance, I know its not so self sufficient but its a step in that direction I think?

Hi Buzzybee,

Congratulations on getting engaged.

I am in a similar quandry to you in that I am getting married in July and want my sister to make the dress for me out of ethical fabric.
I have found a few suppliers but none I could recommend as I have just stumbled across them. Maybe try ebay?

I am thinking of using organic cotton for mine.

Hi buzzybee and congratulations.

Have a look at this

I bought this for my wedding dress from

http://www.rawganique.com/WSD1.htm - in cream. At the time I couldn't find anything nearer.
