Australia trials tiger poo in fight against pests

CANBERRA (Reuters) - A tiger's roar might be scary, but Australian researchers have found that the predator's poo is just as potent.

Researchers at the University of Queensland said on Friday they had successfully trialled a tiger poo repellent, warding off wild goats for at least three days.

"Goats wouldn't have seen a tiger from an evolutionary point of view for at least 15 generations but they recognise the smell of the predator," repellent creator Peter Murray said in a statement.

"If we can show this lasts weeks ... we've just tapped into probably a billion-dollar market. It's enormous," he said.

Murray said the repellent, made of fatty acids and sulphurous compounds extracted from tiger excrement, also worked on feral pigs, kangaroos and rabbits and might deter deer, horses and cattle too.

In an average year pest animals cause about A$420 million (180 million pounds) worth of agricultural damage in Australia the government has said. Others put the cost in the billions, mostly from European imports such as rabbits, foxes and crop-choking weeds

Scaling that down, it should work with cat's poo and small pest animals like rabbits and mice! In that case, maybe we should invite our cats to use the garden as a loo, rather than trying to keep them out?

We had a similar experience with tiger pee,
We were visiting a zoo with offspring in a pushchair, we went into the tiger house "oooh look at the big stripy cat", with that the tiger turned round and lifted his tail- myself and OH jumped back, leaving poor defencless, strapped in, offspring to get a thougher soaking! when we returned home our moggy wouldn't come anywhere near my son.......we also felt we had learned a lesson in parenting too! when it came to the crunch we had left the slow and vunerable to fend for himself- not great for survival of the species- we have improved and had another offspring who has not yet been covered in any predator effluent!

I think that cat's poo is a bit toxic or at least there is somehting in it that is not good to use for growing in.

I had heard the stuff about tiger poo, aparently the best manure is from rhino's and it is sold at Colcester Zoo!
