have weed killed, what next?

Post: # 152788Post noodles »

Hi All,

Rightly or wrongly, i have used roundup all over my plot.
The horrible nettles, grasses, and weeds have all withered and gone yellow.
What would you advise me to do next with all the dead or dying weeds?
I haven't touched them yet, and so they are still firmly in the ground.
Any help would be appreciated.

thanks.

Ive done this on my plot

The idea now is to dig and make beds and dig in some manure and compost and weed them often to get rid of any stragglers

The earth will recover Glyphosate breaks down nicely

Just make sure that the plants you put in dont die

Put the dead stuff on your compost heap

I'd dig out the dead weeds (getting as much of the roots as possible) and put them in my green-bin (council removed compostable waste)

I'd then dig over the beds thoroughly. If I wasn't planting them immediately, I'd cover them with cardboard or black pastic etc.

Then - get them planted up and be vigilant about weeding! It only takes a week or so before they're popping up all over the place again!

Certainly dig out roots but I'd wait longer as yellow is not dead, just dying. They will go brown and dead looking when they are dead. You may need a second dose with nettles.

Yeah, no problem with digging in the dead weeds, as the glycophosphate breaks down....however as Masco & Bongo said, just because you've killed off the parent plant, don't forget about all those seeds laying on the ground, waiting for a bit more light/water/ being turn over into the soil. I've seen it so many times before. People come down the plot, break their backs getting it clear, then come back two weeks later only to see it in a worse state!.

If your digging an area either plant it up with seedlings or a green manure fairly soon, or get it covered up with cardboard and soil or weed suppressant. If your leaving it a long time make sure you check all the joins are kept covered especially after winds.

Carpet can be used, but the new info is it is best avoided, as it is chocka full of chemicals. And is a nightmare to get rid of after its been down a few months and got all manky.
